Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
In this project, we will be studying the CAD geometry that is allocated for the challenge, checking whether the current design can meet the engineering compliance imposed by European Authorities.
As per the design specification, points A, B, C, D, and E on the wheel arch should be 10mm away from the outermost point on the tire profile in the horizontal direction when looking forward towards the car front. As shown in the drawing this distance is represented by L.

In order to conduct the study, we imported the CAD in Catia and developed the base sketch to locate the points of interest. Then we superimposed these points on the plane that intersects with the outermost curve of the tire profile. Then we superimposed the points of interest on this plane. And then we used these points as the reference and calculated their distance normal to the wheel arch surface. Following the few screenshots of the work that we performed.

Results
We observed that only one point was complying with the offset requirement and other points still need to improved.
| Points | Distance | Result |
| A | 10 mm | Complying |
| B | 9.949 mm | Not Complying |
| C | 0.113 mm | Not Complying |
| D | 2.847 mm | Not Complying |
| E | 5.902 mm | Not Complying |
Conclusion
We can conclude this wheel arch with its current geometry won't comply with European Standards. The designer has to consider a considerable change in the wheel arch geometry.
