Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM : Study the Wheel Arch area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or not
using European regulations.

FENDER WHEEL ARCH:

  • Wheel Arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.
  • The design of the wheel arch of the fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers’ compartment and pedestrians from the projection of water, mud and stones.
  • The wheel arch area of the fender is usually designed as a cover or shield over the tyre along its perimeter to stop any debris or stones, dirt, sand, snow, etc, from getting thrown into the vehicle or the BIW area as well as outside the vehicle and onto other vehicles or pedestrians on the road.
  • There are different regulations in this regard based on different regions.
  • This case study has been done according to European standard.
  • As explained in the diagram below, the minimum clearance L recommended at all the 5 points on the wheel arch shown here should be 10mm the points being SB, SA, SC, SD, SE.

  1. European Standard
  • Measure L at sections SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE and produce clearance check chart to validate.
  • At all five sections the L value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.

Wheel guard requirement:

  • The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

Calculation Table:

Section(mm) Require Clearance Measured Clearance Result

SB 10 10 pass

SA 10 9.9490 Fail

SC 10 0.1139 Fail

SD 10 2.8875 Fail

SE 10 5.9973 Fail

Conclusion:

  • The above results we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulations, as the minimum clearance L between the Fender Wheel Arch andWheel.
