Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Wheel Arch
#Objective: To Calculate the wheel arc area and prove whether the car passes the European
standerds or not.
#Introduction:
. The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle.
. The Wheel arch design should be such that it covers the wheel and protects the people inside
the car cabin and also pedestrains from a splash of dust and water particles.
#Representation chart for European Standers for Wheel arch design:

. The Letter "L" here represent the clearance between the wheel edge and the wheel guard, which
should be greater than 10mm.
. Wheel guard requirement: The value of "A" must be greaterthan 5mm than Bb and Cc which are
at angles (degress) 30 and 50 respectively.
#Observations:
Output extracted from Siemens NX

I created this sketch on the wheel perimeter's plan and projected sections Aa and Bb upwards
and Cc, Dd and Ee downwords on the arch to measure the Wheel arch area and values for
clearance L, and Wheel guard clearance "a".
l) Determining the Fender's Wheel Arch Area:

The area of Wheel Arch is 24432.9334 sq.mm.
ll) Determining the value of clearance "L".
1) For Section Aa, L=9.9490mm.

2) For Section Bb, L=10mm

3) For section Cc, L=-0.104198mm

4) For section Dd, L=-2.8873mm.

5) Form section Ee, L=-5.9906mm.

#Observation table: The threshold value for L is 10mm.
Section Clearance(mm) Remarks
Aa 9.9490 Failed
Bb 10 Passed
Cc -0.104198 Failed
Dd -2.8873 Failed
Ee -5.9906 Passed
Thus from the above table, we conclude that the Fender couldn't pass the European standards.
lll) Determining the Value of Wheel guard clearance "a".
1. For section Bb, a=48.4813mm.
Section Cc, a=44.6067mm

The threshold value for "a" is 5mm
The above data collected for Wheel guard clearance from sctions Bb at 30 degrees and Cc at 50
degrees and from the vertical axis has passed the European Standerds.
#Result: After Analysing overall data, we conclude that the car doesn't pass the European
standards.
