Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Wheel Arc
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
Diiferent types of regulations in fender wheel arc are:-
- Japan regulation : The value will be more than 5mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree at the central vertical line.

- European regulation : The value will be more than 10mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree at line above 150 mm.

- US regulation : The value will be more than 5mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 degree central vertical axis.

Challenge
Now we can move to our challenge to check whether the given fender wheel base arc of the car passes the European standards or not.
So by drawing the necessary sketches along the plane near to the wheel, I made 10 points where the European standard demands by marking centre of the cicle of the wheel drum and then taking 30 degrees to the left from centre of the wheel to the vertical line from the centre and 50 degrees to right between horizontal line vertical line from origin and horizontal line and marked two points and taken 150 mm length from horizontal line and marked a point on the wheel base and between the points of 50 degrees and 150 mm offsetted point , marked another point. And the same points projected to the fender side and closed the sketch. Thus we got 10 points. These all 10 points are projected to the fender and wheel base and then made another 10 points and meassured using scale to get it's meassurement to check whether it meets the standard or not.

Now my findings are:-
Meassurement of sketched points.
| a1 | a2 | a3 | a4 | a5 |
| 43.641 mm >10 mm | 25.992 mm >10 mm | 38.359 mm > 10 mm | 42.662 mm > 10 mm | 47.625 mm> 10 mm |
| passed | passed | passed | passed | passed |
Meassuremnt of projected points.
| l11 | l12 | l21 | l22 | l31 | l32 | l41 | l42 | l51 | l52 |
| 10 mm = 10 mm | 5 mm < 10 mm | 9.949 mm <10 mm | 5 mm < 10 mm | 0 mm < 10 mm | 5 mm < 10mm | 2.879 mm < 10 mm | 5 mm < 10 mm | 5.976 mm < 10 mm | 5 mm < 10 mm |
| passed | failed | failed | failed | failed | failed | failed | failed | failed | failed |
Conclusion:-
From the above results we can conclude that the fender does not pass the European regulations, as the minimum clearance L between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
