FENDER DESING USING NX CAD:

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of fender is to design a body in white front fender of a car with its mounting using the information provided by

the styling team. The skin data and master sketch are the information provided by the styling team.

DESING CONSIDERATION OF FENDER:

Fender or quater panel of a car is a BIW component ofa car.It is purpose is to keep the engine bay or engine compartment

protected from the debris and foreign materials such as dust, rain, sand, snow. As the wheel\are tyre rotate a lot of such component get thrown around due to centrifugal force so the fender needs to be designed such that none of that debris

land dangerously.

CONSIDERATION FOR THE DESING OF A FENDER INCLUDES:

  • Safety of occupants
  • Safety of pedestrians
  • Sealing the engine compartment from outside element
  • Styling and aesthetics of the body crash safety
  • Mounting area and clearances

The fixture of a fender is done using nut-bolt,screws instead of welding of adhesive.the fender is usually fixed at 4to5

location to keep the vibration and noise due to the debris and wind low.The fixture location area:

  • Drip area.(fixing with the engine compartment)
  • Bumper mounting area
  • Sill mounting area.(the lower, side component of classis)
  • 'A'-pillar mounting area
  • Chassis mounting areag

A baffle or plastic guard like part is joined to the fender in the wheel arch area.it helps with keeping the vibration and noises

to a minimum. The mud flaps are usually mounted in thge same area.the fender needs to be designed considering the mounting points of these parts and there clearness.

DRIP AREA:

It is the part of the fender where the fender is fixed to the engine component of the car chase.it is usually

middle the edge along the engine compartment to provide clearance for the headlight assembly in the front and cowl area

[wipers, wiper motors etc ] in the back.to keep the aesthetics of the whole car better, all the fixtures are and visually unpleasant parts, welds, sealants, etc are kept hidden such that they are only visible when one actually looks for it such as opening the hood, removal of plastic covers, panels etc.this philosophy holdsgoods for the drip area too.

DRIP AREA MASTER SECTION

DRIP AREA:

Considering the ease of manufacturing using press and die's sharp corners and sudden changes in dimension is avoided,if not possible, relief cuts are added.corner reliefs are provided to avoid intersection on bending.embosses, fillets, blends are given to increase the local strength.

BUMPER MOUNTING AREA:

SILL MOUNTING AREA:

  • For creating the sill mounting the extra portions were trimmed out
  • Then the datum was created and the required sketch was drawn and then projected
  • Then emboss were generated and blended the edges together
  • The fastener holes weer created by using the trim surface feature.

A-PILLAR MOUNTING AREA:

BAFFLE MOUNTING AREA / WHEEL-ARCH AREA:

To keep the material waste or scrap to a minimum unnecessary features are avoided.the edges are kept clean and straight forward wherever possible.considering the weight and cost of production, the design is kept as simple and clean as possible without compromising on the safety aspect of the part.
