Fender Design Challenge

AIM : To design a Front Fender using NX.

OBJECTIVE : To design a Fender mounting on the given model by using Master sketch by considering the safety and manufacturing feasibility for possible mounting region .

INTRODUCTION: Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile , motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well , In British English , the fender is called the wing ( this may refer to either the front or rear fenders .

Its primary purpose is to prevent sand , mud , rocks , liquids , and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire .

Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.Sticky materials , such as mud , may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface , while smooth loose objects , such as stones , can becometemporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground . These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at highvelocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects . For a vehicle moving forward , the top of the tire is rotating upward andforward , and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle .

IMPORTANCE OF FENDER : Car Fenders are an important component of your car .

  • car fenders are the complex sheet of metal covering the front and the rear wheels of your car .
  • Fenders on a car are panels that extend from the front bumper to the car's doors .
  • Car fenders not just add style to your carbut also act as a protective shield for the body of the car .
  • The metal surgeon helps you in getting your car accessorized with the best metallic carfenders in town .
  • We offer a variety of fender flares for cars , trucks , and SUVS which are designed to give a specific look .

Types of FENDERS : They are two types of Fenders

  1. Half Bumper Type : Half Bumper Type Half bumper is used because the waste of material is less & can produce two fender at the same time by slightly increase the raw sheet , and to reduce the weight & cost mostly bumper fender are been produced.
  2. Full Bumper type : Full Bumper Type is not used now a days because it requires large size of baink to produce the part and it occupies more space.

Mostly Automotive industries prefer Half bumper only why because However full bumper is not used as the blank for the full bumper type is huge and involves lots of wastage . On the other side if we slightly increase the blank size for the half bumper type , two fenders can be produced at a same time . Also , plastic can be in cooperated into this type thus reducing the steel material , making it lighter and increasing the performance of the car.

INSTALLATION CAR FENDER

It is great if you know how to install fenders on a car . We are ready to take the burden off your shoulders by doing the job on your behalf . At The Metal Surgeon , we offer you the installation of superior quality fender flares on your car . We specialize in making car fenders which are known for durability . wherein we replaced old fender flares with new ones .

USES OF FENDER :  We can give you a number of reasons to get your car installed with fender flares

  • We can give you a number of reasons to get your car installed with fender flares at our auto restoration shop .
  • Car fenders limit the exposure of your car's body and engine to external elements that are harmful .
  • Fenders flares are attached to ensure that both the body and engine have minimal contact with corrosive elements .
  • Car fenders provide safety to the driver and the passengers at the time of accidents or collisions . They are manufactured in a way to provide bend during front and side collisions .
  • Car fenders are designed to avoid wind resistance and make your car more aerodynamic .

MATERIAL USED IN FENDER DESIGN : You can find modern fenders made from steel , aluminium , thermoplastic , and fiberglass . Steel is the most rigid and abrasion - resistant material used in making fenders . They offer the best protection from large debris and are less likely to dent . Aluminum offers the strength of metal without the heaviness of steel .

FRONT FENDER DESIGN :

Master sketch:

Data Given :

  1. The drip area should be made after leaving the space of 150mm from front for headlight mounting and before 200mm from cowl area and 10mm distance left from Engine room.
  2. The angle from top of flange is 40 degree and 8mm long is created to stop the view of Engine Compartment.
  3. The radius values of Drip area at different stages.

Mountings :

  1. Drip Mounting Area
  2. Sill Mounting Area
  3. A - Pillar Mounting Area
  4. Bumper Mounting Area
  5. Baffle or Linear Mounting Area

1. Drip Mounting Area

  • The drip area would be recognizable fom the opening between Hood and Fender.
  • This mounting is attached to the engine compartment of the car.
  • A min 150mm distance is kept from the front side and a distance 300mm or less can be kept on the rear side.
  • This is to avoid the springback during the manufacturing , the edge of the mounting should atleast 10mm away from any nearby component in the engine.
  • The drip area should be less than 40mm . The embosess that are created on the drip mounting should be flat with respect to the curvature.
  • A dart is provided at the edge of the drip mounting to increase the stiffness.

2. Sill Mounting Area

  • This is palced basically at the botom of the fender . The mounting part is created such that it firmly fits to the sill .
  • The embosess that are created on the drip mounting should be flat with respect to the curvature .

3. A - Pillar Mounting Area

  • A - pillar mounting is a vertical support on a vehicle . It holds the windshield set up and just downside to the A - pillar fender is mounted to hold the position .

4. Bumper Mounting Area

  • It is placed at the front side of the fender , the bumper mount area of fender , mounts on the chassis to hold the position .
  • Since Bumpers are mounted over the fender it is called Bumper Mounting Area ,

5. Baffle or Linear Mounting Area

  • Usually a baffle is mounted on the fender of the car . It is mounted on the wheel arch area .
  • A plastic unit is placed which is called baffle / splash fender linear mounting is placed .
  • These mountings are created for fixing the baffle / splash mounting .
