Fender Design Challenge

FENDER DESIGN:

  • Front fender is a side covering unit of a engine compartment.
  • Its primary purpose is to prevent dust, sand or mud particles from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyre.
  • It also plays an important role in pedestrians safety like preventing the chip particles being thrown in air.

Design a front fender from the given skin data and the master section provided with drip mounting, A pillar, Sill, Bumper, Body, Splash mountings.

Design Considerations:

Front fender comprises of 6 major design requirements, they are

  1. A pillar
  2. Sill Mounting
  3. Bumper
  4. Drip area
  5. Body
  6. Splash Mounting

A pillar: A pillar is the region where the A pillar of the car is mounted from the front fender. It is located at the top right corner of the fender.

Sill Area: Sill area is the lower area of a fender, the sill mounted both on fender and the body of the car.

Bumper: It is the front portion of the fender where the bumper is mounted with the help of brackets.

Drip Area:

  • Two main points to be remembered while designing the drip area.
  • A minimum gap of 200 mm should be maintained from rear end of the fender. This is because to have spacing for cowl mounting.
  • The second thing is to maintain a minimum gap of 150 mm front end of the fender for headlamp mountings.
  • It is considered to be important because it is mounted on the engine compartment.
  • Ribs are provided to improve the stiffness and holes are given for mountings over engine compartment.

Body Mounting:

  • For stable position of fender it is mounted with the car body.
  • Fasteners can be used for assembly of fender with car body.
  • Here the beads also are provided to improve the stiffness.

Splash Mounting:

  • Splash area also plays a vital role anti chipping.
  • It protects the dust particles, spray particles from being entered inside the car.
  • Thus Splash plays vital role in fender.

Hence , the design of front fender according to the engineering standard is completed.
