Fender Design Challenge
Objective -
A report by explaining Fender Design and its mounting points, manufacturing, and all its design parameters
Introduction -
Fender is a term for the part of an automobile, that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other roads spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.
In British English, the fender is called the wing. The equivalent component of a bicycle or motorcycle, wing fitted to vintage cars or overtires on lorries which are not integral with the bodywork, n modern Indian usage is called a mudguard
Classification -
Two Tyes - Full Bumper and Half Bumper
1 Full Bumper Type
As the name goes, it is a long-size fender that covers the wheel completely. This design is having a rigid build but the weight of the car is high and the performance is on the lower side.
1.1 Basic design of the full bumper-type fender.
1.2 Vintage cars with a full bumper.

1.3 New car with a full-size fender.
2 Half Bumper Type
The front portion of the fender is eliminated which helps in decreased weight and increasing performance. This also helps in reducing the scrap material while production. This type is preferred now by most car manufacturers.
2.1 Basic Design of half bumper-type fender

2.2 Producing two fenders from one square sheet, which helps in reducing the scrap and use of less material at the same time.

2.3 A modern vehicle displaying the use of the half bumper type fender
Different Mountings
A Piller mounting
This is used to connect the front-most pillar of the car roof and also to support the windscreen.
Bumper mounting
This goes for connecting the front bumper.
Drip mount
The main mounting area holds the fender and it is connected with the engine frame. When designing this particular area, there are certain measurements that are needed to be followed.

From the front, it has to be 150 mm

On the rear, it is 300 or less

Also, this ramp-like structure is known as "Dart" in NX-CAD and it is made to increase the strength of the part.
Sill mounting
This gets connected with the lower body of the vehicle.
Splash mount
These mounts hold the rubber material known as "Splash Guard", as it prevents any foreign materials to enter the engine compartment
