Fender Design

Aim : The aim of the project is design the Fender design & its mountings.

Fender :

  • Fender is a front outer side member of a car which covers the wheel side.
  • Fender purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other particles.
  • The major role of the fender is to avoid the chipping inside the engine compartment.
  • During the motion the wheel picks a sand mud and small stone particles and throws it inside the car and these fenders will be helpful in preventing them by hitting inside the engine compartment and car body.
  • The fender plays a major role to avoid problems for pedestrian also.
  • Fender are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
  • These fenders will have a plastic part which lies on wheel arch area.

Types of fender :

  • Full Bumper Type
  • Half Bumper Type

Areas to be considered while designing a fender :

  1. Drip Area Mounting.
  2. A-Pillar Mounting.
  3. Sill Mounting.
  4. Bumper Mounting.
  5. Baffle Mounting.

Drip Area:

. Drip Area Mounting:

  • The drip area is the most important mounting in a fender, it is the point where the fender has to be attached to the engine compartment.
  • The drip area should be designed in such a way that it should be at least 150mm away from the front end of the fender to have sufficient space for mounting headlamps housing.
  • Mostly the drip area starts from 200mm away from the rear end of the fender, to have sufficient space for the cowl which carries the wiper equipment. The length of the drip area depends on the length of the fender.

  1. A-Pillar Mounting:
  • This mounting position is created for attaching the fender to A Pillar of the vehicle.
  • The mounting has to be created by taking the reference from the A-pillar of the vehicle.
  • Enough clearance should be given for the easy mounting of the wiper equipment.

3. Sill Mounting:

  • Sill mounting is created on the bottom portion of the fender for attaching to the sill.
  • The mounting part should be created such that the fender is firmly attached to the sill.

RELIEF AREA

  • Relief areas are the areas which use to avoid the stress concentration on a particular region.
  • Relief is provided because after couple of time at corners a chip happens and the corners comes up.
  • This happens because of the smooth surface, the stress flows over and that particular part goes under stress then that cornes accumulate all the stress from the surfaces.

Bumper Mounting:

  • This mounting point is created for attaching the bumper to the fender.
  • It should have enough strength to hold the bumper steadily.
  • The Bumper Mounting region must be rigid in order to withstand the force acting upon it during collision. So, the Mounting space can be larger.

Baffle Mounting:

  • These mounting points are created for attaching plastic components i.e baffle which prevents chipping inside the engine compartment.
