Fender Design
FENDER DESIGN
AIM: To design a front fender of the car by following the given master section as per design considerations of OEM by using NX Cad
FENDER
It is a aesthetic component/part of a car that frames the wheels. Prevention of sand, mud particles and other road contaminants from being thrown into the engine compartments.. Also to the pedestrians by the rotating tires are the main purpose served by fenders..
The front fenders is separate components where has the rear fenders are integrated with the body sides.
TYPES OF FENDERS
1. FULL BUMPER TYPE:
These types of fenders were used in the earlier models of vehicles. They contribute to a major increment of the steel weight byjust covering the front head lights with respect to the bumper region. The problem associated with this kind of fender is there is lot of wastage in the blank and every inch of a material is a cost to the industies..

2. HALF BUMPER TYPE:
These fenders are mainly used for serving the purpose of the cost-cutting and reducing enough proportions of a steel wait resulting in a reduction of the weight of the vehicle slightly... They can be economically manufactured, eg. by slightly increasing a blank size, we can produce two fenders at the time.

.
MOUNTING REGIONS OF THE FENDER:
These are 5 mounting regions on the fender, they are
- A - piller mounting
- Body mounting
- sill mounting
- Bumper mounting
- Drip mounting
DESIGN METHODOLOGY:
Given data:
MASTERSECTION:
- Design Of The Drip Area mounting:
- It is the most important mounting unit of a fender.
- it is connected with the engine compartment therefore lot design constraints are to be followed while designing the fender.
- While designing the drip we have initally leave 200 to 300mm for the crawl top.
- For placing the headlamp we have leave atleast 150mm at the front while designing the fender.
- Crowl top part consists wiper and its instrunments.
Two darts are added on the longer side of the drip area in the order to give the stifness and adds strength to the part. This helps the fender to not to vibrate and impact forces outside of a fender during motion of vechicle.
Emboss are provided on the mounting to strengthen them during the fastening.
Design of sill mounting area:
Sill is a panel direcly below the bottom of the door supporting the floor and may be used to combine the floor and body . The bottom end of fender is mounted on a sill body for reinforcment of the fender panel. Thus the sill mounting position is designed with the holes and embosses. M5 fasteners are used to fix the fenders on a sill area.
Design of a Bumper mounting area:
The Bumper mounting are is used to fix the plastic bumper to a fender to the help of fasterners.
Design for the A-Piller mounting Area:
The A-piller is a structural piller that combains the body to the roof. This make the sides of the windshield rest.
Front fender are fastened to a A-piller to form a structure.
Design of the baffel mounting area:
The Baffel mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the tyre. It protects the car engine compartment and the pedestrains from causing injuries from chip out debrise on the road when a car in motion. They are mounted on the fender using the special type of locking clips which are made up of plastics.
THICKNESS OF THE FENDER:
The thickness of 0.75mm inwards on the final sew surface of the fender to a sheet metals parameters.
CONCLUSION:
Final design of the fender is made with the help of Nx-cad software by following master section.
