Challenge

Fender Design

Objective of the Project : To design Fender & the main design requirements to be considered are Drip Area, Bumper mount, A Pillar mount, and Sill mount areas with the help of Master section as referance given.

About Fender : Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

Also, the Fender is a housing for the wheels that keeps road debris contained. If nothing was covering the wheels then, all kinds of debris would be kicked up by the rotating tires. The Fender not only protects your car from sustaining damage from road debris but, it prevents this debris from being thrown up at other vehicles on the road or at Pedestrains as well.

Types of Fenders :

1. Full Bumper type, and 2. Half Bumper type

Main areas to be considered while designing a Fender :

1. DRIP AREA

2. SILL MOUNT AREA

3. A PILLAR MOUNT AREA

4. BUMPER MOUNT AREA

5. BAFFLE MOUNT AREA

Master Section as given :

1. DRIP AREA : It is the area where the Fender is attached to engine housing through fasteners. There should be some considerations followed to design the Drip area of the Fender. From the backside of the front Fender, there will be 200 mm clearance for the Cowl (wiper motor) mount area.

  • Used Law Extension tool according to the given data.
  • Used Emboss tool to create a depth of 3.5 mm and Draft angle of 15°.
  • Trim Sheet for Nut hole of Diameter 5 mm and Bolt hole support of 10 mm Diameter as referance line.
  • Edge blend And Face blends of radius 2 mm.

2. SILL MOUNT AREA : It is the bottom most area of the Fender. It gets connected with the door region of the car.

  • Extend Sheet up to 15 mm.
  • Emboss of a rectangle with the depth 3.5 mm.
  • Trim Sheet of 2 Holes of Diameter 5 mm.
  • Edge blend and face blend of radius 2 mm.

3. A PILLAR MOUNT AREA : This mount area is located near the Cowl top of the car, where it is fastened with the Cowl.

  • Used Law extension to extend sheet up to 42 mm.
  • Used Trim Sheet to remove unwanted material.
  • Used Curve on surface to create the sketch for mounting.
  • Trim Sheet for creating hole of diameter 5 mm.

4. BUMPER MOUNT AREA :

  • Used Law Extension of 15 mm length at an angle of 75°.
  • Used Bridge curve to remove sharp corners.
  • Embossed sketches at the draft angle of 15°.
  • Used Trim Sheet to create 2 holes of diameter 5 mm.

5. BAFFLE MOUNT AREA : In this mounting area, baffles are mounted using fasteners, which are used to seal the opening between the wheel & engine compartment.

Conclusion : Hence, I've completed the Fender design challenge successfully & acknowledged the grip of tools while attempting the challenge.

I'm attaching the Part file and STEP (.stp) format file along with the Project.
