Fender Design

                                     FENDER DESIGN

   Aim:

To create a fender with the design parameters.

   Objectives:

  •    The main objectives of this project is to design a fender with given data using a software NX CAD.
  •    To create a drip area follow the given the data.
  •    To create a design of mount for Sill, Bumper, Baffle(Splash) and A - Pillar with a fender design.

   Fender:

  •    Fender is the US English term for the part of an automobile (vehicle body) that frames a wheel well (the fender underside).
  •    Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the totating tire.
  •    When vehicle is moving, tyres pick up stones and other and hurl them in all directions.
  •    Fenders are basically present to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and contain the motion of these particles.
  •    More elaborate designs include fender skirts for enclosing the outside edge of the wheel well, and stylized pontoon fenders for exposed fenders.

   Types of Fenders:

  1.   Full Bumper type fender
  2.   Half Bumper type fender

   1.   Full Bumber type

  •    The full bumper type fender was used in old cars, it covers the full area until the front lighting. But it has a lot of sheet metal material which is unnecessary and increases the weight of the fender.
  •    These type fenders are no longer used in the automobiles.

   2.   Half Bumper type

  •    Half bumper type is used because the waste of material is less and can produce two fender at the same time by slightly increase the raw sheet.
  •    To reduce the weight and cost mostly bumper fender are been produced.

Different types of mounts with design the fender:

  1.    Drip area
  2.    Sill mounting
  3.    Bumper mounting
  4.    A-Pillar mounting
  5.    Baffle Splash cover mounting

   Manufacturing Process:

  •    A car Fender bumper is made by a process called reaction injection molding(RIM), which basically consists of making a special polyuthane compound and introducing it into a large fender.
  •    RIM is a process that conserves raw materials and reduces costs.
  •    It is similar to injection molding except thermosetting polymers are used, which requires a curring reaction to occur within the mold, common items made via RIM include automotive bumpers, air spoilers and fenders.

   Data:

Fender drip area has been designed by given the master section.

   Master section:

   Design:

      Sheet thickness is 0.75mm

   Mounts on the Fender:

   1.   Drip Area:

  •    It is the area which the fender is to be attached to engine housing through bolts.
  •    These are some standards to design the drip area from the backside of the fender there should be 200mm clearance for cowl mounting and from the front the side the clearance should be 150mm for the head lamp.
  •    Considering the above design when have to design emboss, holes to attach the fender to housing and some stffners to provide strength to the drip area.

   2.  Sill Mounting:

  •    This mounting is use to link the fender with the sill (underside of the door) of the car.
  •    Emboss and holes are given to attach the fender to sill.

   3.   Bumper Mounting:

  •    A mounting area of the fender to bumper.
  •    Bumpers are usually made of plastics which covers the front of the car and protect it at time collisions.
  •    Emboss and holes are given to attach the fender to bumper.

   4.   A-Pillar mounting:

  •    The mounting of this area is a joint where we have to ensure that the hole provided for mounting the fender shouldn't affect the clearance at the joint and the aesthethics of the vehicle.
  •    And also provideing the double  hole to redure the complexity while mounting.

   5.  Baffle splasg mounting:

  •    There are additional holes are provided to support the fender lining.
  •    It is a plastic whuch used as a barrier between fenderb and outside paticles, dust, rocks, plastic cover is used to protect the dust and rock and it is mounted on fender.

    Conclusion:

Fender design in completed by using NX12 and satisfying all the requirements with the given data.
