Fender Design
DESIGN OF FRONT FENDER-
OBJECTIVE- To develop the front fender using Nx cad following the design parameters .
INTRODUCTION:
Fender is a front outer side member of a car which covers the wheel side. Fender purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other particles. Fender is a closure component, closing the engine compartment and other compartments. The major role of the fender is to avoid the chipping inside the engine compartment. During the motion the wheel picks a sand mud and small stone particles and throws it inside the car and these fenders will be helpful in preventing them by hitting inside the engine compartment and car body. These fenders will have a plastic part which lies on wheel arch area. The fender plays a major role to avoid problems for pedestrian also.Fender are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. It is often also called as Mudguard.Fender is the US English term for the part of a vehicle body that frames a wheel inside it. Its primary function is to prevent sand, mud, liquid, and other materials from being thrown into the air by rotating tires. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

Types of Fender
Fender is basically of 2 types.
- Full Bumper type
- Half Bumper type
Presently we are using half bumper type. The reason is when we were using a full bumper type fender, the blank which we were using is very big, and we have quite lots of wastage from the blank. But in the case of the half bumper type, the case is the opposite. Here is the amount of scrap production is very low. Because can makes a major role in automotive industries. when we are using full bumper type it requires more material and weight of the car also increased. so because of that reason we use half bumper type.

and the fender also comes with diffrent arrangements according to different cars.
fender vents:
in highend cars a vents is provided in the fender.
The main purpose of fender vents is to relieve built-up air pressure from inside the wheel arches which causes aerodynamic lift. Typically, there are air intakes in the front of the bumper directing air over the brakes to cool them. This air gets trapped in the wheel arches and creates high pressure. High pressure results in lift over the front wheels reducing traction. Relieving this built up high-pressure system in the wheel arches reduces front axle lift thus increasing safety and grip.
In addition to high pressure,tTrapped air in the wheel arches also creates aerodynamic drag. Drag is the force of air pushing in the opposite direction of the vehicle, reducing efficiency. Some research suggests wheel arches account for up to 30% of aerodynamic drag of a vehicle. With fuel efficiency ratings becoming increasingly more strict on modern vehicles, you can understand why so much attention is being directed towards the reduction of this inefficiency. Efficiently routing air into and out of the wheel arches increases fuel economy through the reduction of drag.
Another benefit of fender vents is to efficiently vent hot air generated by heavy breaking out in the air stream. Quickly relieving hot air generated from the brakes makes room for more cool air to pass over the brakes, thus increasing efficiency. Finally, it is worth mentioning that trapped air in the wheel arches also contributes to cabin noise. Reduction of cabin noise is more pleasant to drivers on long trips reduces driver fatigue.
in some of the car manfacturers they arrange the side mirrror on the fender for better styling of the cars. it looks very diffrent than the other carsin some of the cars have side lights on the fender. mostly it is used in old cars. but at present days some of the automobile industries also used.

these all arrangements is differ in car to car. and it is depends on the cost and their design.
DESIGN PARAMETERS -

Drip area :
This region is mounted below the hood inner panel which needs to be flush when the hood is in a closed condition and also there should be very fewer gaps.
The drip area is either spot welded or in some cases bolted down via self-tapping screws.
The following design sheet/master section shows the criteria which need to be followed while designing the drip mounting.

A-pillar area
The A-pillar area mounting depends upon the A-pillar of the car the mounting can also be provided with ribs to strengthen the part. this mounting is critical in design as it has to be mounted on A-pillar properly
Body side area
Another mounting point is created for the body side on the fender this mounting is created such that it can be mounted on the body of he car. it may consist of one or two bolting holes
Sill area
Sill area mounting is also an important mounting part.this mounting point is basically on the bottom of the fender. the mounting part should be created such that the fender is firmly attached to the sill
Procedure :
Input -

fender skin or given master section:

master section for fender drip
in the master section at position 5 they give 3 degree for feasubility. mostly we are using deep drawing to manfacture the fender. so when we give 3 degree angle it ill easily withdraw.
200-300 mm Distance from the rear end is kept for the wiper motor assembly.
150 mm Distance from the front end is kept for the headlamps in the bumper.
Drip area

- The edge of the mounting part should be atleast 10mm away from the nearby components in the engine
- The height of drip area mounting should be less than 40mm so that it reduces the springback effect during manufacturing .
- It should be distanced atleast 150mm from the front side ande 200m from the rear side
- Ribs should be provided in order to increase the strength of the mounting part

CONCLUSION:
As we successfully learn about the feature and purpose of front fender and made it in NX CAD and we have learn the tools involved in it.
