DESIGNING OF PISTOL WITH BARREL(COLT M1911)

DESIGNING OF FULLY FUNCTIONAL PISTOL

WITH BARREL (COLT M1911)

:- SANKARI VINAY

AIM:-

Our Aim is to preparing of a pistol with barrel. That means we need to create hand gun(pistol) which is having barrel. That will look like fully functional or existed for use.

INTRODUCTION:-

We designing of colt m1911 as my internship project. In this project we designing of m1911 for protection purpose. These guns are used for self-protection and army also. I have designed different parts like receiver, slide, barrel, trigger, hammer, magazine and many different parts for assembling of colt m1911.

Pistols(handguns):-

Pistols are most used guns. There are different types of pistols according to the actions like single action, double action, automatic. And also, according to cartridge(ammo or bullet) used in them. Major cartridges are .45 ACP, 9mm and 7.62mm. There will be different types under these cartridges and many other different types also. According to No. of barrel also we will differentiate the pistols. Single barrel, double barrel and multiple barrels (this type of handguns specially customizing one’s. There will be different kind of barrels will be there like triple barrel and quad barrel pistol).

LITERATURE SURVEY:-

The M1911, also known as Colt 1911, or Colt Government, is a single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. The pistol's formal designation as of 1940 was Automatic Pistol, Caliber.45, M1911 for the original model of 1911 or Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 for the M1911A1, which was adopted in 1924. The designation changed to Pistol, Caliber.45, Automatic, M1911A1 in the Vietnam War era.

Designed by John Browning, the M1911 is the best-known of his designs to use the short recoil principle in its basic design. The pistol was widely copied, and this operating system rose to become the preeminent type of the 20th century and of nearly all modern centerfire pistols. It is popular with civilian shooters in competitive events such as USPSA, IDPA, International Practical Shooting Confederation, and bullseye shooting. Compact variants are popular civilian concealed carry weapons in the U.S. because of the design's relatively slim width and the stopping power of the .45 ACP cartridge.

The U.S. military procured around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols during its service life. The pistol served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The M1911A1 was replaced by the adoption of the 9 mm Beretta M9 pistol as the standard U.S. military sidearm in 1985. However, the U.S. Army did not replace the M1911A1 with the Beretta M9 until October 1986, and due to the M1911's popularity among users has not been completely phased out. Modernized derivative variants of the M1911 are still in use by some units of the U.S. Army Special Forces, U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy.

Pistol with barrel:-

Pistol with barrel will have different types,

There different types of pistols under the barrel according to the no. of barrels. Here we design the single barrel, semi-automatic pistol. That is the m1911 and also called as colt m1911 or colt government model.

This m1911 was designed by the John browning in the year of 1911. That’s why it will called as M1911. Later, this model was upgraded and renamed as M1911A1 and M1911A2. This pistol manufacture company is colt manufacturing company, and it will be called as colt m1911 also. The action of m1911 is short recoil operation. The .45 ACP cartridge is used in M1911. it was replaced by the 9mm beretta M9 pistol. But still M1911 was not replaced because of its adoption in using and functioning.

Colt m1911:-

Colt m1911 are most widely used hand gun in militaries and home safety

In colt m1911 assembly there are many parts to create the fully functional pistol. We consider major parts as barrel, slide, receiver and magazine. And we can take remaining parts as supporting or assembly fixing parts. In colt m1911 part design there are many different parts they are.

PHASES IN CARTRIDGE FIRING OR FUNCTIONING OF M1911:-

PHASE1 (COCKING):-

Cocking means pulling the slide backward to hold by using the slide stop. Then the hammer will be disengages with the firing pin and locked by using the sear.

PHASE2 (LOADING):-

In loading the cartridge will enters into the barrel, when we cock the slide by pulling it. It will enter by using the spring effect in the magazine.

PHASE3 (FIRING):-

In firing phase, the trigger is pressed then the to disengage the hammer with the hammer. Then the hammer will hits the firing pin with force. This force will be generated by the hammer strut and main spring. When it hits the cartridge the primer will generates the spark to ignite the propellent by the force. Then the bullet will be fired through the barrel. The bullet case will be ejected from the ejection port in the barrel.

MAIN PARTS OF THE M1911:-

Receiver:-

Receiver is the major important part in the pistol. Because, it will be holding and contains all parts in it with some extra attachments. This receiver holding the barrel, slide, magazine with some extra attachments.

Receiver will hold the barrel with some extra attachments like barrel bushing, barrel link, barrel link pin, slide stop, slide stop plunger, plunger spring and safety plunger.

It will holding the slide with the help of same extra attachments slide stop, slide stop plunger, plunger pin, springs and barrel.

It will contain the main spring housing, hammer, safety grip, ejector and sear with the help of extra attachments.

Barrel:-

Barrel is a key part in the pistol or any firearm. The projectile or bullet (ordinary terminology) travels through the barrel by way of an explosive charge (propellant). The barrel is linked to a receiver, which houses the operable parts of the firearm, including a magazine which holds the ammunition(cartridge).

Barrel will be having the slots to in it for give extra motion or velocity to the bullet while traveling through it. It will help to travel the bullet with proper direction and rotation for better velocity. It will help to increase aerodynamic force of the bullet when the propellent (gun powder) ignites. It will move with the help of the barrel link which is connected by the barrel link pin and slide stop.

Slide:-

Slide is the one of the most important part in the gun. Slide will helps insert the bullets in the barrel and helps to fire the bullets. When slide went back the hammer will moves hammer before firing. When it moves back the sear will holds the hammer before firing.

And slide will contain the firing pin, firing pin spring. It will ignite the propellent (gun powder) in the bullet by hitting the bullet with force which is created by the hammer while pressing the trigger.

Slide stop will resist or hold the slide while moving backward when bullet is fired. It will stop the slide not to move behind the required distance. Because it may leads to disengage from the receiver.

Safety lock:-

Safety lock is placed in the back of receiver to stop firing of the bullet at stationary or not using condition. That means if unexpectedly trigger pressed when the gun is in rest position. It will prevents the trigger to move the disconnector. It will moves up when a human holds it then only the trigger bow moves towards the disconnector to release the hammer.

Magazine assembly:-

Magazine is assembling of different parts to hold the bullets or cartridges in it. It will contain the magazine tube, magazine base, magazine base pins, magazine spring and magazine follower. For holding the magazine with the receiver, we will use the magazine catch, magazine catch spring, magazine catch lock, ejector and ejector pin.

It will helps the cartridge to enter into the barrel with the help of magazine spring and magazine follower. It will contain some relief at the back of the magazine tube to avoid sharp corners.

Trigger assembly:-

Trigger is the main operating part to firing the bullets from the barrel through the slide by the helps of disconnector. Disconnector will help to move the sear to release the hammer to hit the firing pin. It will be the assembly of the trigger pad and trigger bow. When trigger is pressed sear spring will disconnect the sear from the hammer which locked while loading the cartridge into barrel by moving slide backward. Then that released hammer will hit the firing pin to ignite the propellent.

Firing pin assembly:-

Firing pin assembly contains the firing pin, firing pin stop and firing pin spring. Firing pin will hit the cartridge when it hits by the hammer. After hitting the cartridge bullet will be released due to burn of propellent or gun powder. Then the firing pin will retain to its original position by the action of the firing spring. And may moves more than the required motion for that case firing pin stop which will helps to stop the pin. And here it will be having extractor to hold the firing pin stop.

Extractor:-

Extractor is used to hold the firing pin and cartridge rim. It will helps to the remove the base of the cartridge from the gun after firing and also used to stop the firing pin by holding the firing pin stop after bullet is fired.

Stocks (left & right):-

Stocks are used to cover the parts inside the receiver and it will provide grip to the pistol holding person. It will be fixed to the receiver by using the stock screw bushing and stock screw. It will be fixed both left and right side of the receiver.

Sights(front and rear):-

Sights used for aiming to the target while shooting. It will helps for the better accuracy while shooting. We have two sights one in front that is FRONT SIGHT and one in back that is REAR SIGHT.

Ejector:-

Ejector is used to hold the slide with the receiver. It will contain the ejector pin to hold with the receiver. If we want to separate the slide from the gun or receiver, we need to remove the ejector by using ejector pin. It is the one which holds the slide with receiver for its function.

Recoil spring attachments:-

It will be placed in the receiver and at the bottom of the barrel. It will contain recoil spring guide and recoil spring plug. The main function of the recoil spring is retains the slide to its original or initial position before firing. And also the action of the colt m1911 is also called as short recoiling principle gun.

Plunger tube:-

Plunger tube will hold the safety lock plunger, slide stop plunger and plunger spring. Which is used to give relative moment between the slide stop and safety lock while slide is moving backward when the cartridge(bullet) is fired. It will helps to retain the slide to its original position

Main spring housing assembly:-

Main spring housing assembly main function to provide the force to hammer strut to hit the firing pin by the hammer. Main spring housing assembly will contain the main spring housing, main spring housing pin, main spring cap pin, main spring cap and main spring retainer. When trigger is pressed sear will be releases the hammer to hit the firing pin. Then the force will be provide by the hammer strut that will generated by the main spring housing assembly.

Hammer strut:-

Hammer strut is connected with the hammer and placed on the mainspring cap, it will help to hold the hammer with sear. And its main function is to give force while releasing from the sear. It will help to hit the firing pin with high velocity which will leads to ignite the propellent in the cartridge(bullet). It plays main role in hammer velocity with the help of the mainspring in mainspring housing.

Hammer :-

Hammer is main action part in the bullet firing phase. It will hits the firing pin after trigger is pressed. The sear will disengages the hammer then it will hits the firing pin with some action which is generated by the hammer strut and main spring. It will hold by the hammer pin and hammer strut will joined by the hammer strut pin.

Magazine catch assembly:-

Magazine catch assembly is to hold the magazine with receiver or pistol. It will helps to hold the magazine with the help of slot presented in the magazine tube. Which will helps to hold the magazine until whole cartridge fired or until removed manually. The loading and unloading of magazine will done manually.

disconnector:-

disconnector is used to move sear to release the hammer to hit the firing pin. It will be used disconnect the hammer with the sear. It will resisted by the safety grip when it is placed in rest or not using position.

Safety grip:-

Safety grip is used to prevent the firing when it placed at rest position or not using. It will resist the disconnector to hit the sear spring. If it hits it will disengages the sear with the hammer which will leads to hit the firing pin and fire the bullet.

Sear:-

Sear is the main component in cocking and firing phases. When cocking it will holds the hammer and when firing it will releases the hammer to hit the firing pin and fire the bullet. The sear will connected with the sear pin and it will mounted with the disconnector with this sear pin. It will release when disconnector moves by pressing trigger. When trigger is pressed sear spring rapidly moves the sear to disengage with hammer.

PARTS OF .45 ACP CARTRIDGE:-

.45ACP cartridge is lead antimony alloy encased in soft brass or cooper plated soft steel jackets. It contains primer, anvil, vent, brass case and bullet. When the hammer hits the primer it will moves the anvil with the rotary motion. Then the anvil hits the vent then vent creates the disturbance in the gun powder. Due to this disturbance gun powder ignites and bullet fired through the barrel.
