Challenge

Design of backdoor

BACK DOOR DESIGN

Objective

Use the providing styling surface to come up with a back door design, use appropriate design methodologies and provide the necessary reinforcements and embosses.

Software used:

NX CAD

Back door instruction:

An automobile back door or tailgate is the panel that covers the boot (or trunk) of an automobile. It enable to access to the main luggage compartment. A hinge allows the boot lid to be raised, while device such as springs or gas cylinder hold it up in open position. The back door is an assembly of many parts such as inner panel, outer panel upper, outer panel lower and reinforcement. inner panel is attached to the outer panel using mastic sealant.

Parts in back door

  • Back door outer panel (UPPER)
  • back door outer panel (LOWER)
  • back door panel
  • Hinge reinforcement
  • Gas stay reinforcement
  • latch and striker reinforcement
  • Wiper motor reinforcement

DRAFT ANALYSIS

Draft analysis done to show that part can be easily drawn out from the mould.

So the above design has been analysed using the tool on NX CAD with having 7 degree as the allowance.

HEMMING AND RELIEF:

Hemming is the process of joining two surfaces using set of rollers to bend the parent over the sub part.

Relief is done to decrease the stress concentration along the corners and also decrease the clumping of the metal along the corners, this is done by trimming the corners by a minimum radius for the rollers to pass along smoothly.

CONCLUSION

Thus the back door was designed from the given styling surface and draft analysis is also done on the inner panel to check the manufacturing conditions. in this challenge i earned to design the inner panel, outer panel, wiper motor reinforcement, Hinge reinforcement, gas stake reinforcement, latch and striker reinforcement and its positions.
