Back door
A back door is the is the rearmost part of an automotive which opens at the back end and gives access to the cargo area of the vehicle. Back door in a car gives access to the luggage area and in some cars to the passenger compartment. It is the rearmost part of the car and has mounts for tail lamp, hinges, wiper motor, gas stay etc.it is made up of an inner panel and 2 or 3 outer panel. All the panels of the back door are joined together by hemming or spot-welding process. In most of the car’s gas stay is used to operate the back door as it reduces the effort for the person opening. Few cars have electric motor to lift the back door when a switch is pressed. In the automotive industries it is known by different names such as tail gate, rear door and trunk.
Materials For Back door
Material used for the back door is chosen with various parameters such as cost, strength required, weight, no of the reinforcements required, method of creation. Steel is used mostly in cars. Now aluminium is also used in some luxury cars.
Types of Back Door
On the basis of the attachment of the back door to the car body during the opening of the back door, it is classified into 3 types
· Top mounted
· Bottom mounted
· Side mounted
Top mounted
It is the most common backdoor used in the automotive industry. It is used in passenger vehicles.it is has both gas stayed and motor powered.it provides greater rear visibility compared to other two backdoors.
Side mounted
It is mounted on the side of the car. Its advantage is that goods can be easily kept and removed from here. In India some SUVs used side mounted tail gate.
Bottom mounted
Bottom mount doors are used in estate type cars, pickup trucks and some luxury SUVs. This is the most comfortable type of back door, it can be also used as supporting table or holding long items.
On the basis of mode of operation, it is classified into two parts
a. Gas stay
Gas type is the common type used in the cars operating the backdoor. Components of backdoor are gas stay, hinge, wiper mechanism, rear light and rubber beadings for sealing of door.
b. Power lift type
Power lift type is also known as electric motor actuated type.It is mostly used in luxury cars. As it is the sophisticated type of operating the back door. A switch is pressed to open or close the door. This consists of the power latch, anti-pinch switch, PTF assembly.

Design Consideration of the Back Door
· Visibility criteria
· Force dissipation
· Latch and striker positions
· Hinge positions
· Hemming and relief areas
· Gas stay position
Components of the back door
· Back door outer panel (upper and Lower)
· Back door inner panel
· Sealing flange
· Striker mount reinforcement
· Gas stay reinforcement
· Wiper motor reinforcement
· Hinge reinforcement
