OBJECTIVE:
To develop the design of an automobile tail gate with respect to various design consideration and parameters and to assemble the parts with the help of CATIA V5 software.
INTRODUCTION:
a car back door, also known as tailgate, is a part used to cover the rear boot space in an automobile and provides the outer structure for the behind part in an automobile.
The door is hinged to the roof at the top side and has a latch and striker mechanism at the bottom side in most cases.
These doors can be opened manually or powered electronically. Powered doors are usually found on minivans, high-end cars, or modified cars.
The back door also has an attachment of the gas stay for the operation of opening and closing of the door.
The gas stay can either be attached on the back door or on the body side.
The back door mainly consists of these two prime components:
Inner panel
Outer panel
Each of these components are designed based on its individual design requirements.
INNER PANEL:
Inner panel is the commodity which provides the main strength to the door.
The inner panel can be made of steel or aluminum based on company targets.
Aluminum is lighter and deep drawing is easily possible hence we can get the part as a single commodity overall., while steel is a heavy metal comparatively and we might need to assemble separate commodities and join to get the overall part.
The inner panel contains emboss to provide additional strength and divert the forces to outward direction.
There is also an additional gap provided between inner and outer panel to attach the headlights.
Emboss are also provided in the respective areas of latch and hinge attachments.
The steps followed to obtain the design are:
|
1. Create inner panel offset |
|
2. Create the ceiling flange |
|
3. Obtain the sweep towards the inner panel |
|
4. Create the Y emboss |
|
5. Provide slots for the attachments such as hinge, gas stay, etc |
|
6. Thicken the surface (0.7)mm |
OUTER PANEL:
The design of the outer panel is based on the styling provided and based on the dimensions of the car.
The width of the glass frame depends on the rear visibility criteria setup by the team.
The outer panel is linked to the inner panel with the help of mastics and hemming process.
HEMMING:
Hemming is a forming operation in which the edges of the sheet are folded or folded over another part in order to achieve a tight fit. Normally hemming operations are used to connect parts together, to improve the appearance of a part and to reinforce part edges.
HINGE AXIS LATCH CRITERIA:
The above circular trajectory in the figure shows the path followed by the door while opening and closing.
The latch attached on the door has to be tangent to the curve drawn between the hinge axis considered as center and the latch point as the curve radius as shown in the above figure in order to get a perfect lock without interference.
BACK DOOR ASSEMBLY:
The outer panel and the inner panel is linked with the help of mastics and hemming.
Components such as headlight, viper motor is attached within it.
Spot welding is usually avoided since it spoils the aesthetics of the design.
CONCLUSION:
The design of the car back door is developed considering all the parameters and the assembly is done with the help to CATIA software.
