Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT
1. Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2
AIM : i) To assign materials and thickness to floor and ground floor level
ii) To align floor plan with grids
INTRODUCTION : Appropriate materials and thickness can be assigned to any element using property palette. In property palette elements are viewed and modify the parameters according to the need of the model. It displays both user editable and read only properties. To edit "user editable properties" a duplicate of the element is created and then properties are modified and saved. Material browser in property palette represent actual properties such as concrete, sand, wood, glass etc. It also displays properties such as identity, graphics, appearance, physical, thermal properties for each type of material present in the browser.
PROCEDURE :
- Open revit software
- Create a layout as shown below

- Go to architecture tab and select floor (type : floor-Grnd-Susp_65Scr-80lns-100blk-75PC)
- Create a floor by selecting boundary of the layout
- Select the floor in 3D view
- Click on edit view type in properties
- Create a duplicate of floor and name it as floor1
- Go to structure and click on edit
- Change material type and its thickness as shown below

- Go to architecture tab and select floor (type : floor-Grnd-Susp_65Scr-80lns-100blk-75PC)
- Draw a rectangle floor around the layout which represents ground
- Select the floor in 3D view
- Click on edit view type in properties
- Create a duplicate of floor and name it as floor2
- Go to structure and click on edit
- Change material type and its thickness as shown below

- Now place the horizontal and vertical grids as shown below

RESULTS :
Floor is created and materials of the floor is assigned

Ground around the residental building is created and materials are assigned to it

2) Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.
AIM : To add, modify, assigning materials and assigning thickness to the walls
INTRODUCTION : Appropriate materials and thickness can be assigned to any element using property palette. PROCEDURE:
- Select exterior wall (Basic wall-Ext_50Cdg-100lns-200Cdg)
- Go to properties of the wall
- Create a duplicate of the wall and name it as exterior wall
- Now change the materials and thickness of the wall

- Go to elevation view and enter level 1 value as 20'

- Now select the exterior walls and in properties change top constraint to Level 1, base constraint to Level 0
RESULT : Exterior walls are modified

a) Beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected
- Levels of the building indicate number of floors of a building so it is necessary that walls should be connected to the levels.
- Top and base constraints helps to control whether the wall is drawn from specified level.
- It helps to attach walls to other elements such as roofs, floor, ceiling on a vertical plane.
- If any change in elevation of level happens, then height of the wall also changes automatically.
b) Which option is convenient for modeling walls, By Height or By Depth?
When height is used for modeling walls, walls are created above the level and when depth is used for modeling walls, walls are created below the level. Since buildings are designed starting from ground level and towards upwards, creating many number of floors. Therefore by "height" it is convenient for modeling walls.
3) Copy the model elements (wall, floor) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level . Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align elements to a different level
AIM : To create First floor of the residential building
INTRODUCTION : Walls, floors or any other elements are aligned using modify tools.
PROCEDURE :
- Select Layout and click on copy (modify tab)
- Paste it in level 1
- Separate floor and wall

- Select the copied floor
- Align the floor on top of the walls
- Now select the copied walls and align it above the floor

- Create another level i.e level 2 at a distance 40' from ground and assign walls to the top constraint : level2

RESULTS :
Model elements aligned on first floor

4) Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms
a. Living Room/ Drawing Room ( 15’ X 18’)
b. Dining Room (9’ X 11’)
c. Bed Room ( 9’ X 12’ and 15’ X 11’)
d. Rest Room ( 10’ X 12’ )
e. Kitchen (8’ X 10’)
The above are for examples. You can use them or use your measured entities to create your model based on your layout. You may include entry walkway, Patios or Guest rooms based on your creativity and purpose of modeling. Convert units if you are using metric system
AIM : To create partition walls as per given dimensions
INTRODUCTION : Partition walls divides an enclosed and different rooms are created.
PROCEDURE :
- Partition walls are created as shown below in both groundfloor and first floor

- Top constraint of the partition walls are assigned to level 2
RESULTS :
Partition walls are created in ground floor and first floor

5) Based on week 2 assignment, the components to be included in a residential unit were inserted to the Revit file. Place these components in appropriate locations to add details to your residential model
a. Place Doors and windows in the wall at appropriate locations
b. The Living Room must include furniture set, couch table and TV desk and shelf cabinets
c. The Dining Room must include a table and chairs serving the purpose of eating
d. Bed Room must include a bed set, shelf, lighting and individual study desk and chair
e. Rest room should include bath tub and plumbing fixtures discussed in class
f. Kitchen should include countertops, gas stove cabinet and shelves to store food items
g. The wash/storage room can include washing machines and shelves to store clothes
All the components are available in Revit Library. Use them to place at appropriate locations to add details to your model. Use 3D navigation to check the model and its authenticity on a real time basis to verify the model
AIM : To place doors, windows, furniture at appropriate locations in the building
INTRODUCTION : Different families and elements are loaded using "Load Autodesk Family". Most of the families are editable and this is an effective tool to find and load the elements into the model. These elements are saved along the project model

PROCEDURE :
- Click on insert tab and select load autodesk family and place following elements in the layout :
- Doors
- Windows
- Furniture set, couch table and TV desk and shelf cabinets in living room
- Dining table in dining room
- Bed set, shelf, lighting, individual study desk and chair in bed room
- Bath tub and plumbing fixtures in rest room
- Countertops, gas stove cabinet and shelves in the kitchen
- Washing machines and shelves in store area
- Components used

RESULTS :
- Doors and Windows are created
