Conceptual design of a building with columns and shear walls
1) Shear walls in the plan should be symmetrically located to reduce the twist or collapse effect.
- As it experiences the maximum effect of lateral forces it also reduces the lateral displacement under the effects comming upon.
- Its main function is to provide the lateral strength to the building to resist the horizontal forces as well as wind forces to the foundation without any ill effect.
- It also provides the lateral stiffness to the building in the direction of their orientation which reduces the lateral movement or lateral sway of the building and hence reduces the damage to the structure.
- Shear wall arrangements must be absolutely accurate because if not, it will cause negative effect.
- When the mass of the comming on the centre and the hardness mass of centre coincide with each other the distance of shear wall from the mass of centre also plays an important role.
- Shear walls have the high palne stiffness and strength too which can be utilized to resist the large horizontal loads and support ths gravity loads.
- Hence it is very necessary to determine the most effective location of shear wall it should be symmetrical, eccentric and redadunt to safely transfer the loads to the foundation.
2) In this building plan the centre of stiffness is not coinciding with the centre of mass of the building.
- in seismic response study it is assumed that all the points of the building foundation are excited simultaneously hence if the centre of mass coincide with the centre of rigidity a hozital component of ground motion will induce translational motion without rotation.
- Torsional response in building structure system arises due to the centre of mass and centre of stiffness of vertical lateral forces resisting elements and due to accidental torsion to the rotational components of ground motion about a vertical axis hits the eccentricity between the assumed and the actual stiffness and mass, uncertainity in live load distribution and uncertinity in dead load.
- The magnitude of lateral deflections are related to stiffness and distribution of mass so irregularities in the structure amplifies in structural response leading to higher damages and also experience differnt drifts at adjacent stories of the buildings coupled with excessive torsion.
- Proper symmetry is not achieved and placement of columns is uneven symmetry should be maintained to avoid torsional effect.
- Beam no.3,7,9 are not supported by the column on both the sides this must be avoided.
- The beam column junction will fail by the occcurance of lateral vibrations ( wind effect orelse earthquake forces) and ultimately the structure may collapse.
3) Simplicity, Regualrity and Symmetry is not achieved in the building plan. The columns placed in the structure are irregular and due to this the beam column connection will loose its strength. The redundancy will not be achieved as columns are not placed symmetrically. There is no proper load transformation path in the structure so the laod transformation will get distrubed and when load transformation path gets disturbed it leads to internal damages of the structure. Columns at the outer sides are not present so will not show sufficient ductility in the structure. Hence will effect the strength directly and when tends to experience heavy vibartions can laeds to internal damage or complete collapse.
