Challenge

Challenge 2- Comparing the performance of three types of beams under bending load.

Aim: Performance of three different cross-section beams under bending load.

Procedure:

Case1:Rectangular Beam:

  • Draw the rectangular model with 45 & 80 mm dimension along the front plane and extrude it to the length of 400 mm as oer the question.
  • Select the Static method of analysis.

  • Now apply Alloy steel to the beam as shown in the image below.

Boundary canditions:

  • Now fix the one end of beam as shown in the image below:

Now apply the External load of 1500N by selecting the top face of beam in the image below with edge of refrence as downward for the direction of force.

  • Meshing:

Now apply the meshing to the entire beam assembly as shown in the image below:

  • Now run the study as shown in the image below:

Results:

Von mises stress is obtained as shown in the image below:

Maximum Von Mises Stress is 7.385 E+06 N/m^2.

Displacement:

Maximum bending occurs at the end having magnitude of 3.102E-02mm.

Case2: I section with chamfers:

  • An I section of beam is drawn with the given dimensions as shown in the image below:

  • Model is extrude to 3D using the Extrude command to 400 mm.

Boundary canditions:

  • Apply fixed support to the one face of the beam.

Apply force of 1500 N to the face as shown in the image below:

Results:

Von mises stress is obtained as shown in the image below:

Maximum Von Mises Stress is 2.238 E+07 N/m^2.

Displacement:

Maximum bending occurs at the end having magnitude of 9.41E-02mm.

Case3: U section with chamfers:

  • An U section of beam is drawn with the given dimensions as shown in the image below:

  • Model is extrude to 3D using the Extrude command to 400 mm.

Boundary canditions:

  • Apply fixed support to the one face of the beam.

Apply force of 1500 N to the face as shown in the image below:

Results:

Von mises stress is obtained as shown in the image below:

Maximum Von Mises Stress is 3.858 E+07 N/m^2.

Displacement:

Maximum bending occurs at the end having magnitude of 3.08E-01mm.

Conclusion:

So by doing the bending study with Alloy steel for different cross-section we can conclude that how deflection of beam or overall bending is changed like here for rectangular beam deflection is minimum of all the three.
