Bird Strike - Project - 2

Aim : To perform a Bird strike on Aero engine simulation and compute the strains, stresses and plot energies.

Explanation : The given model(Bird_Strike.k and AL-4495-MaterialModel.k) contains elements for bird, casing, hub, blades and material data for blades.

First numbering of nodes and elements are done as per the given guidelines.

Create section, assign thickness for cylindrical bird, blades and casing as shown below

section for hub

Create material mat elastic

The material for the blades is given

Assign section and material for the parts

Parts numbering are also done as per guideline

Create boundary conditions

Create a curve for rotational velocity as shown below

Create spc for casing to fix it in all dof

Create contacts between the parts

For self contact in blades, create a contact automatic single surface

Next create three contact automatic surface to surface

Contact interaction between bird and blade

Contact interaction between blades and casing

Contact interaction between bird and casing

Create a contact between the hub and blades

Create tied shell edge to solid between them as shown below

Create a velocity for a travelling bird with a v = 75 mm/s

Create a angular velocity for a rotating blade omega = 0.5 rad/s

Create control cards as shown below

Create database

Save the file and submit for the run.

Post processing

Effective Von mises stress

Effective plastic strain

Energy Plot

Conclusion:

The simulation performed here can be used as an initial step to include the complexities of the thickness function of the blades. Further studies can be conducted by varying the position of the bird and varying its approach velocity.
