Benchmarking
Benchmarking:
Benchmarking is the process of measuring the performance of a product, service or process of one company against that of another company to be considered
the best in the industry, "best in class". Benchmarking focuses on identifying opportunities for internal improvement. By studying
high performance businesses, breaking down what makes that high performance possible, and then comparing those
processes to the way your business operates, you can implement changes that will produce meaningful improvements.
This could mean tweaking your product features to better match those of your competitors, or changing the range of services you offer, or
installing a new customer relationship management (CRM) system to enable more great personalization with customers communicate.
There are two basic types of opportunities for improvement: sustained and dramatic.
Continuous improvement is incremental and only requires
small adjustments to make major progress. Dramatic improvements could only be achieved by redesigning the entire internal
workflow.
Process benchmarking of this kind can operate at several levels:
- similar processes in the same plant or department
- between different plants or departments
- between different competing organizations
- between similar processes using the same process between different departments
Step-by-Step Benchmarking:
Benchmarking is a simple yet detailed five-step process:
- Select a product, service, or internal service to measure.
- Determine the top companies you should be measuring against the organization you will benchmark your company against.
- Gather information about its performance or internal metrics.
- Compares data from two organizations to identify gaps in your business performance.
- Adopt the best performing internal processes and policies.
- Benchmarking will show which changes make the biggest difference, but it's up to you to implement them.
To measure anything, you need to have quantitative data that can be used for research. This means breaking down the internal process into
IT performance metrics. Quantify everything, because only quantified information can be accurately compared.
Benifits:
In addition to helping companies become more efficient and profitable, benchmarking has other benefits, too, such as:
- Improving employee understanding of cost structures and internal processes
- Encouraging team-building and cooperation in the interests of becoming more competitive
- Enhancing familiarity with key performance metrics and opportunities for improvement company-wide
In essence, benchmarking helps employees understand how one small piece of a company’s processes or products can be the key to major
success, just as one employee’s contributions can lead to a big win.
