Benchmarking

BENCH-MARKING : Bench-marking is a process of find out what are objects/equipments/machines/automovtives already in the market and what we are going to give the best and newly futuristic objects/equipments/machines/automovtives to the customer/consumer.

In VEHICLE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS we are oberved that two types of bench-markings, they are

  1. BENCH-MARKING 1
  2. BENCH-MARKING 2

1. BENCH-MARKING 1 : Bench-marking 1 is explains about what type of features, specifications, price difference, span of an object. What are the new systems are added to the existing component.

2. BENCH-MARKING 2 : Bench-marking 2 is explains about the detail structure of Bench-marking 1. In this process, we are differentiates part to part comparison of our componenet to competitor components. We should provide quality, quantitative and best futuristic component/equipment/automotives to the customer.

Mainly in CAR design, body is the main thing. In car body design involves there are two types,

a. body on frame

b. monocoque (or) unibody

a. body on frame has seperate body and frame. The body is which is mounted on rigid frame to fix all the components inside of it. This is an old construction of car body making. The weight is more, complex in design, more time taken for designing and manufacturing.

b. monocoque (or) unibody is combination of body and frame to form like single sheet metal, by using welding maciine the body and frame are welded together to make an monocoque. This is also called as a Unibody. These are more reliable in design and manufacturing. These are in simply design. These are provided wiht light weight material and the perfomance is more. In present generation we are using monocoque body structures for car making.

We are having different types of body shapes like

SUV, MUV, SEDAN, MINIVAN, CROSSOVER, LUXURY etc,.

  • Design is not decide as we are en gineers. Even matriculation students also design these all the things nowadays, In design, we must know that why we giving that particular shape, size and dimension to the object. That is what we have to find out and making new things that will conclude why we are engineers.

In VEHICLE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS, there are 4 types of processes are involved in it.

  1. PREDESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
  2. DEVELOPMENT ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
  3. DESIGN ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
  4. MANUFACTURING AND MARKETING

1. PREDESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS : In this, what are the plannings we have and what we are going to manufacture new things except what the things already exist in the market.

2. DESIGN ENGINEERING PROCESS : In this, we should make soft copies of our thoughts into reality in the form of drawings, 3d model designs, assembling, manufacturing and structural analysing. We should finalise the product design and manufacturing process.

3. DEVELOPMENT ENGINEERING PROCESS : In this process selecting tool, selecting suppliers, prototypes making, problems rectifying while assembling.

4. MANUFACTURING AND MARKETING : In this process prototypes are manufactured and going to quality checking for whether it is reached its requirements or not, and extend the market into the widerange.

  • I am selecting HYUNDAI i20 for Mr. D.S. Pughazhyendhii, based on following considerations :

- It's available under 10lakhs.

- The engine displacement is more i.e, 1493cc.

- Mileage is also more than remaing cars and i.e,. 25kmpl

- Type of fuel is Diesel, it is cheaper than petrol cost, and availabity is more.

- This is having 6 gear speeds for more speed to reach the destination.

- Hatchback body is provided for it, it's best suitable for the official look and stylish look.

- 2 air bags are existed in the car, nowadays based on accidens, its importance is increased. 2 bags are reasonable for the buying car.

- Front brakes are disc and rear brakes are drum for all the 4 cars.

- length and width of the car is more than all the cars.

- It's having more fuel storage capacity i.e, 37ltrs.

- It's designed with best turning radius is 5.0, more than all the cars.

- 4 cylinders are provided.

Finally, i decided to suggest Hyundai i20 is suitable for Mr. D.S. Pughazhyendhii, for travelling to his native place and to his office. It's can be used for long and short distance easily based on its diplacement. Its also provides 5 seats in it.
