Assignment 7-Side Pole Crash Simulation Challenge

Objective:

In this project we are going to run a side pole car(BIW) crash simulation.

Procedure:

-Firstly, open HyperMesh software and choose RADIOSS profile.

-Now, import the 0000.rad file.

-Now, Change the units to (Mg mm s) or (Kg mm ms). Here, I have used (Kg mm ms).

-Delete all the interfaces defaultly present in the geometry and Create an interface with friction of 0.2 as mentioned.

-Now, Check wheather there are any penetrations or intersections to the geometry. If there are any use auto-fix option to fix them.

-Now, here in this project we need to create a rigid wall as we have created in project-1. In project -1 we have created a planar wall but, here in this project we will create a cylindrical wall(Poll) with friction of 0.1 as mentioned.

-Now, here comes the trickiest part of all to get the COG(Center of gravity) to the place where it has to be. To do that we need to add masses at the front and rear areas where the seats are located.

-Assign initial velocity to the geometry.

-Now, run checks to ensure good quality of the geometry.

-As mentioned in the question run the anlayis for 80 ms.

-Befor that we need to mention the output parameters.

-Firstly, we need to create cross-sections for the cross-members.

-Now, we need to create springs to calculate the intrusions of the B-pillar and hinge pillar.

-Now, to calculate the peak velocity we will select a node at the inner panel of the door and calculate.

-Cross-section forces graph

-Here, from this graph we can see that the force developed inside the cross-section2 (i.e the cross-member2) is more than that of the cross-section1. This is because, the cross-member2 comes in direct contact with the pole once there is contact with the pole. Hence, cross-memeber2 deforms more than compared to cross-member1.

-Intrusions

-Here, from the graph we can see that the intrusion of the b-pillar(i.e 9900037) is less than the intrusion of the hinge pillar(9900038). This is because, only the half of the b-pillar will come in contact with the Rwall, but in the case of hinge pillar it is the first position to come in contact with the Rwall. Hence there will be a huge amount of impact forces developed on the hinge pillar. So, hinge pillar will have highest intrusion.

-Peak Velocity

-Here as you can see from the graph teh highest velocity(Peak) is right at the start of the collision and then it gradually reduces as increase in time.

Result:

The fuel tank Intrusion and the other intrusions can be reduced by using the anti-intrusion beams between the pillars. They increase the rigidity of the doors and distribute the energy on the event of a side crash as performed in this project.

If at all that does'nt work then we can add another cross-member reinforced to the fuel tank.
