Assignment 2
Answer the following questions
- Check the material properties of the rail component and calculate the speed of sound in steel rail=_______
2. The length of the rail is about 1000 mm. calculate the time takes for a shock wave to travel from one end of the rail to the other.
3. Time for sound to travel length of rail=______
4. Edit the engine file so that the stress wave can be monitored, moving from one end of the rail to the other during impact -this will require a termination time equal to the time it takes for the sound to travel the length of the rail(set on/RUN card)
5. Set the frequency of animation output to a time that will give 20 animation steps(/ANIM/DT)
6. Change /print -10.
7. 3D meshing
Objective
To perform 3D meshing for the given models
Challenges
- Create a 3D mesh with target tet size=5mm,hex size=10mm,tet collapse=0.15.
- Then Save in .hm format.
Tetra meshing
Tetra elements can be automatically created using the tetramesh panel. The Tetramesh panel allows you to fill an enclosed volume with first or second order tetrahedral elements.
Brick meshing (Hexa mesh)
The procedure for brick meshing of complicated parts is to first create a shell mesh on the surfaces and then convert this to hex elements by using the meshing commands extrude, spin, sweep, linear solid, etc.
3D Tetra meshing procedure
- Study geometry.
2. Click on F12 key (2D àAutomesh) to mesh the surface with element size as 5mm.
3. Press 3D from the menu page and go to tetra mesh option in performing tet mesh.
4. Use mask option to check tet elements attained.
5. Tet collapse within the range.
6. Final model
3D Brick meshing procedure
- Study geometry.
2. First, create a shell mesh on the base surface. Further, use element offset meshing command to convert shell mesh to hex elements.
3. Use spin meshing command to obtain hex elements on the arm curve.
4. Use linear solid meshing command to obtain hex elements on arm straight.
5. Use a solid map to obtain hex elements on the boss.
6. Final model
Result and conclusion
- The 3D meshing (tet mesh and brick mesh) process is performed on given models.
- The mesh is been carried out on given models by keeping tet target size of 5 mm and brick target size as 10 mm.
- With tet target size of 5mm, the element check criteria on tet collapse of 0.15 are analyzed.
