Assignment 1-2D Meshing Challenge
Objective
1. Carry out geometry cleanup of the 3 given models
2. Extract the midsurface
3. Create 2d mesh with target length 5mm(Min: 3.5mm and Max: 7mm).
Procedure
Part 1.
1. Import the model into Hypermesh using import model option.
2. Delete all solids using delete options.
3. To carry out geometry cleanup, loof for red edges inside the geometryif you can find any
4. to remove the free edges from within the geometry use options like toggle edge in edge edit or use surface edit option to edit existing surfaces and surface menu to create new surface.

5. Extraction of the midsurface can be done by either using the Auto midisurface option in the geometry menu or by ofsetting one side of the surfaces by distance equal to half the thickness.
6. Cleanup each of the geometry manually using toggle edge, washer splits and other cleanup tools based on the geometry of each midsurface

7. Create new property and assign thickness and material to the property and assign the corresponding property to the midsurface component.
8. Set the quality criterion (Min and Max element size) in the check element window in the tool menu.
9. Mesh the midsurface using Automesh option in the 2d menu with target element size as 5, use mixed type mesh to keep the number of rotational quads to a minimum.
10. Adjust the number of nodes at the mesh boundaries to priliminarily improve the mesh as much as possible.

11. Check the quality index of the mesh with the quality index tool in the 2d window.
12. Eliminate the mesh issues by using the cleanup tools in the quality index window (like element optimization and place node), or edit element tools, or remeshing the desired Area wherever required.
13.View the model in 2d detailed element representation to represent the thickness of the elements.
Part 2
Follow the same steps for part 2 and part 3 as well
1. Midsurface

2. Mesh

3. Thickness

Part 3
1. Midsurface

2. Mesh

3. Thickness

Result and Conclusions
- All 3 parts were meshed to the given criterion and 100% of the element satisfies the criterion.
- The mesh captured the geometry sufficiently well.
- Thickness was measured for each part and assigned to the shell mesh.
