Project

Analysis on a plate with a hole

Aim:

To Perform a static analysis on two models of a plate with holes via SolidWorks, one analysis for a plate with one hole and one analysis for a plate with three holes. Finally, compare the obtained results between the two plates.

Objective :

  • To perform a static analysis on two models of plate with holes (plate with single hole and a plate with three holes )
  • To apply a fixed relation to one of the short side of the plate and apply a force of 1000N on the other such that the plate is stretched.
  • Run the analysis and compare the results for stress, strain and displacement

Steps:

  • The procedure for the plate with one hole and three holes is shown below
  • For all the two cases the part material was selected as Alloy steel
  • The fixtures command is used to x the one vertical face so as to perform the operation
  • Load of 1000N was applied on the opposite face to the fixed face in each case
  • apply mesh
  • Finally the results for stress,strain & displacement were obtained for the each case

CASE 1

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

CASE 2

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.

Selection of material:

Alloy steel for both case

applying constrain and load :

CASE 2

Meshing:

CASE 1

CASE 2

Results:

CASE 1

CASE 2

Conclusion:
The results show that the second model has a bit less stress than the first model, this means that the increase in the number of holes in a plate decreases the stress on a plate. This is because stress is inversely proportional to the area, so when the area increases the stress decreases and vice versa. In addition, the chances of rupture are increased in the first model too.

The second model exhibits a slightly higher displacement value than in model 1. Finally, the strain is also marginally lower in model 1 than model 2. When talking into account the economical and structural point of views, Plate 2 is the more effecient design since it has slightly less stress and strain values and model 2 has a lower material cost.
