ANALYSIS OF BUCKLING PHENOMENA USING SOLIDWORKS
AIM: To perform Buckling Analysis on a Cyclone Separator Stand without Stiffner and with Stiffner.
OBJECTIVES:
1) To find the buckling factor of safety for cyclone sepator stand without support.
2) To find the optimal position where the stiffener has to be placed for maximum buckling factor of safety.
3) To find the buckling factor of safety with stiffener in the suggested optimal position and verify it against the maximum buckling factor of safety generated by the design study.
FEA PROCEDURE:
1) First we are going to import the model of cyclone separatoe stand and then remove the cyclone separator from the stand to perform a new case study.
2) Go to the parts and select the material as alloy steel from the material properties option.
3) We have to fix the base of the stand using the fixtures option. Hence, we have fixed the four legs of the stand for performing analysis.
4) We have to provide a force of 150000 N on the top face of the stand with the fixtures provided.
5) Create the mesh and select as default mesh level and click mesh and run.
6) We will get results for cyclone stand without the stiffner and we will also get the optimum Factor of Safety.
7) Now we need to create a stiffner which is created normal to the Top face of the cyclone separator stand. The stiffner is provided between the legs of the stand at an OFFSET DISTANCE = 1000mm and the THICKNESS OF THE STIFFENER = 75mm is created.
8) Provide the variable as offset distance of stiffener and input distance of some range of length and select the constraint as buckling FOS of some minimum limit and set the goal as some buckling FOS to get the optimum distance of stiffener. Then we will get the optimum distance of stiffener.
BUCKLING ANALYSIS:
In many design projects, engineers must calculate the factor of safety (FOS) to ensure the design will withstand the expected loadings. Calculations require correctly recognizing the mechanisms of failure, and this is a dificult task. All too often we associate structural failure only with yielding and are satisfied when design analysis shows a suficient FOS related to yield.
BUCKLING ANALYSIS ON CYCLONE SEPARATOR STAND WITHOUT STIFFENER:
1) The model of the cyclone separator stand was obtained from the Skill lync website. It is initially a step file which consisted of the model.
2) The file then is imported into solidwroks software and necessary changes and iterations have been done by the software.
3) Under add ons option in Solidworks, we have chosen the simulation option which consists of Buckling Analysis.
4) A new study is begun for performing Buckling analysis on the stand.
5) We select the Buckling analysis option in the menu to perform it on the model.
6) When the model is imported, it consists of various other components in the model which arent needed for the analysis.
7) Hence, they are excluded from the analysis by selecting the necessary components which are supposes to be excluded.

BUCKLING ANALYSIS ON CYCLONE SEPARATOR STAND WITH STIFFENER:
1) The model of the cyclone separator stand was obtained from the Skill lync website. It is initially a step file which consisted of the model.
2) The file then is imported into solidwroks software and necessary changes and iterations have been done by the software.
3) Under add ons option in Solidworks, we have chosen the simulation option which consists of Buckling Analysis.

5) We select the Buckling analysis option in the menu to perform it on the model.
6) When the model is imported, it consists of various other components in the model which arent needed for the analysis.
7) Hence, they are excluded from the analysis by selecting the necessary components which are supposes to be excluded.
8) Similar steps have been performed for obtaining results for Buckling analysis on cyclone separator stand with stiffener.
9) The top face of the stand is slected as the plane and is made normal to sketch a stiffener between the legs of the stiffener.
10) We are then adding the sketch of the sitffener using the corner to corner rectangle command and completing the sketch.
11) Once the sketch is done, we are using the Extrude option in the features command bar to create and OFFSET = 1000mm for the position of the stiffener and the width of the stiffener is 75mm.
12) Upon doing this steps the stiffener is added to the cyclone separator stand. Now we add the material to the model and the selected material is Alloy Steel.
13) The legs of the model is fixed using the Fixtures command and force of 150K N is added to the top face of the model.
14) We are using the mesh and run command to perform buckling analysis on the model provided. The results obtained are as follows:

FORCE OF 150K N IS ADDED TO THE TOP FACE OF THE MODEL

BUCKLING ANALYSIS IS ACHIEVED ON THE CYCLONE SEPARATOR STAND WITH STIFFENER

FACTOR OF SAFETY FOR BUCKLING ANALYSIS IS FOUND OUT TO BE 27.611
1) Using the design study, we are going to vary the position of the stiffener to find the optimum value for Factor of safety with stiffener in the stand.
DESIGN STUDY IS PERFORMED ON THE STAND WITH STIFFENER TO FIND THE OPTIMUM VALUE FOR FACTOR OF SAFETY

Hence from the table given above, we can say that Senario 4 gave us the best value for Factor of Safety with stiffener. The value obtained is 27.611 which matches with the value obatained from the Buckling analysis.

CONCLUSION:
From the results obtained, we can say the factor of safety for Cyclone separator stand without stiffener is 9.3636. In the case of Cyclone Separator Stand with Stiffener the Factor of Safety is found out as 27.611 at an offset distance of 1000mm.
