BODY OF CONTENT

Introduction

Cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulates from an air, gas or liquid stream, without the use of filters, through vortex separation. When removing particulate matter from liquid, a hydro cyclone is used; while from gas, a gas cyclone is used. Rotational effects and gravity are used to separate mixtures of solids and fluids. The method can also be used to separate fine droplets of liquid from a gaseous stream.

STEPS FOR DESIGNING

Before starting drawing make sure that the unit system is in mm.

Case1. When support is not provided

Our aim is to study the supports of the cyclonic separator. So, we supress the other part mounted on it.

Case2. When support is provided

  1. Firstly, draw the square to provide the support for the legs of the cyclonic separator.
  1. Now go to the extrude option and provide the position and thickness of the support.
  1. Now the final design of the stand of cyclonic separator.

STEPS FOR FEA SIMULATION

For doing FEA buckling analysis in Solidworks make sure that the simulation is enable in Add ins of the Solidworks.

  1. Firstly, click on simulation option after that go to the new study option as mention in figure with the red colour.
  1. Now the select the type of analysis which you want to do like static, dynamic, buckling etc as shown in figure after that click on ok button. Here I am going to study for buckling analysis.
  1. Now you will enter in the window which you have selected for the analysis as shown in the figure below.

Now the essential option which we have to provide for doing analysis is highlighted with the red colour box in figure below. Both red colour box represents the same option.

  1. Now right click on cyclone separator with supporting option and select the apply material option as shown in the figure below.
  1. After that one dialog box will appear, choose the material from the dialog box as per your requirement and click on apply button. Here I used alloy steel for the material. When you click on the apply option the colour of your design will change.
  1. Now right click on fixture option and select the type of fixture which you want in your design as shown in the figure below. Here I am using fixed geometry to fix the legs of the stand of cyclone separator and click on ok button.
  1. Now go to the external load option and select the load type which you want to apply on your design. Here I used the force option for 150 KN force which is applied on the face of the beam as shown in the figure below.
  1. In order to do meshing of the design we need to select the mesh option and click on create mesh. After that there is two way to do meshing one is automatic and second is manually. Here I used for automatic method and set the size of mesh towards fine region as shown in figure. Smaller the mesh size will give you more accurate result.

  1. The figure represent the meshing of the beam
  1. Now right click on the part and click on run option. The name may vary according to your design but to run the simulation we need to follow this step. When you click on run button it starts the simulation.
  1. After completing the simulation the result will be displayed on the screen.

STEPS FOR PARAMETRIC STUDY FOR DIFFERENT POSITION OF SUPPORT

  1. After completing simulation, now right click on simulation tab present at the bottom of the solidworks and select create new design study as sown in the figure.
  1. For doing parametric study, we need to provide variable to optimize the design. For providing variable we need to click on add parameter after that one dialog box will appear.
  1. In the dialog box we need to provide the variable which we want to vary. Here I have used the offset parameter for the support of the stand of cyclonic separator.
  1. After that we have to decide the minimum and maximum length of the variable and we can also define the step for the parameter.
  1. After providing variable we need to provide constraint for design. For this we need to click on add parameter.
  1. After clicking add parameter we need to decide the parameter for constraint. Here I have provided buckling factor of safety from the simulation data as shown in figure.
  1. Now we have to decide the goal for the design which is the required condition for our result. For doing this we need to click on add parameter.
  1. After clicking add parameter we need to decide the goal parameter. Here I have provided buckling factor of safety from the simulation data as shown in figure.
  1. After that all the data and variable will be displays on the parametric window which is shown by the red colour box in the figure.
  1. We can also go to table view to see the parameter and active scenarios for the parametric study as shown in the figure. After completing the input of the parametric we need to click on run button as shown in the figure.

CONCLUSION

  1. The buckling Factor of Safety for the cyclonic separator stand without using support is 9.401 and after providing the support the Factor of Safety increase to 27.57.
  2. As the factor of safety is greater than 3 so it is acceptable for designing.
  3. The optimum position for the support of cyclonic separator stand is at 1 meter from the top surface of the stand.
  4. Position other than 1 meter is having low factor safety.
  5. The buckling factor of safety for the supported cyclonic stand is 27.57 which means that the design can hold the load 27 times more force applied on it.
  6. After doing parametric study we found that scenario 10 is best from all scenario, which means when support is at 1 m from top of the stand.
