Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_1_Casing Design
CASING DESIGN USING NX CAD
OBJECTIVE:
To design a casing of sheet metal using NX cad software.
INTRODUCTION:
Sheet metal is metal formed by an industrial process into thin, flat pieces. Sheet metal is one of the fundamental forms used in metalworking, and it can be cut and bent into a variety of shapes. Countless everyday objects are fabricated from sheet metal. Thicknesses can vary significantly; extremely thin sheets are considered foil or leaf, and pieces thicker than 6 mm (0.25 in) are considered plate sheet or "structural steel".
Sheet metal is available in flat pieces or coiled strips. The coils are formed by running a continuous sheet of metal through a roll slitter.
DESIGN METHODOLOGY:

DESCRIPTION:
The designing of casing in NX involves various options or tools explained below.
TAB:
After creating the 2d sketch in sketcher we use tab option to convert to the 3d sheet of desirable thickness.
NORMAL CUTOUT:
After creating the sketch on the base sheet metal this option used to cut out the part drawn normally without any stretches.
BENDS:
This option is used to create the bends where ever required by sketching the line on the surface according the required direction of the bend with required radius of the bend.
FLANGE:
This option is used to create the flange at the edges of the base sheet metal.
BREAK CORNER:
To create the fillet to the sharp corner edges we use this option by providing the required radius.
UNBEND:
This option is used to unbend the modified or deformed sheet metal into straight undeformed sheet.
REBEND:
It helps to rebend the sheet to its original shape by realigining all the flanges and bends.
DIMPLE:
This command is used to create a raised dimple fearures in the sheet metal part. The dimples can be placed on any flat face including flanges and will extend in the direction of the face. The dimple features will be governed by the settings defined in the options form.
BEADS:
A bead is along drawn out impression, which is impressed to increase stiffnesss in metal sheets or plates. Depending on the workpiece size and material thickness, the ratio of length, width and imprint depth must be adjusted to obtain the maximum strengthening effect.
MIRROR:
Mirror can applied for both the bodies and features where we can create or copy the same features or body with respect ot the any other plane of surface.
FLAT PATTERN:
After the object is completely finished and to produce the machining drawing we use flat pattern option to create the detailed flat sheet with all the features marked on it along with its description.
DRAFTING:
Drafting is used to convert the sheet metal into 2d drawing for manufacturing reference.
