Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_1_Casing Design

Objective :

The main objective of this project is

  • To create sheet metal modeling of the casing using NX Cad
  • To learn about the sheet metal modeling features and applications

Introduction :

Sheet metal is metal formed by an industrial process into thin, flat pieces. Sheet metal is one of the fundamental forms used in metalworking, and it can be cut and bent into a variety of shapes. Countless everyday objects are fabricated from sheet metal.

Sheet metal is used in automobile and truck (lorry) bodies, airplane fuselages and wings, medical tables, roofs for buildings (architecture), and many other applications. Sheet metal of iron and other materials with high magnetic permeability, also known as laminated steel cores, has applications in transformers and electric machines

The casing is a cover or shell that protects or encloses something.

Design methodology :

Description :

1. Setting Sheet metal preferences

2. Creating Tab

Tabs are used to “shake-a-part” pieces nested in sheet metal as well as to create “mini-nested” pieces for additional manufacturing processes. This is the most common shaker tab and is normally created with a rectangle or square punch.

A sketch is drawn on an XY plane with the required dimensions

3. Creating a Normal Cutout

Normal Cutout command extracts volumes from sheet metal by using sheet metal production principles. Cutting faces will be perpendicular to the sheet metal surface.

4. Bending

Bends sheet metal model by the reference of a line that lies on the sheet metal.

5. Creating Flanges and Break corners

Ads flange on an edge and create a bend between two walls. The flange can only be made on a straight edge.

You can make corners between curves in the sketch of the NX. If both curves intersect, the curves are trim to make a corner.

6. Unbending

Unbend: Flattens the sheet model through selected bends.

7. Creating Holes

8. Creating a Dimple

Dimple is used to give more strength to the part. The flat portion of the part posses less strength & rigidity. So, there are high chances of failure in the part. The Dimple adds strength & rigidity to the part also reduces the chances of failure

9. Creating beads

10. Rebend

Rebends, the unbent feature of the sheet metal model. It uses after the “Unbend” command If needed.

Drafting

Drafting is a vital tool that allows users to add to their work instructions, hold associativity, and create full prints of tooling and fixturing. New capabilities in NX 12 allow for the jump to drafting from manufacturing while in previous versions of NX, you could only jump to drafting from modeling or assembly.

CASING Views

Conclusion

  • Sheet metal modeling of the casing is successfully created.
  • Understood the NX Cad sheet metal features and its application.
