Underbody Coating

Underbody Coating:

Underbody coating (anti-rust coating) as the name suggests, it\'s a coating provided to prevent rusting. Underbody coating provides long term protection from corrosion to car’s underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails, and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion. Undercoating is popular because it provides a protective rubberized coating to areas on a vehicle that experience significant weathering and damage. Undercoating acts as a barrier against rust, moisture, salt, abrasion, and impact damage. Most commonly used on a vehicle’s undercarriage, frame, the underside of a hood and trunk lid, door skins, floor pans, wheel wells, and more. Undercoatings can also be used for other non-automotive applications. Rust-Oleum Undercoatings are designed for bare metal or previously painted surfaces. Do not use Undercoatings on surfaces that come in direct contact with heat or high temperatures such as mufflers, exhaust components, and other similar surfaces. Rust-Oleum Undercoating is easy to apply an asphalt-based coating that helps prevent undercarriage damage caused by scratches, rust, and weather.

Benefits
• Minimizes Sound: It minimizes the sound from underneath the car resulting in the noiseless, smooth driving experience.
• Heat Insulation: It insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures from beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.
• Anti-chipping property: If any stone hits the coating it does not get chipped away hence protects the underbody from exposure to water.

Underbody protective coatings are used to protect the vehicle chassis from the external environment, to ensure the integrity and safety of cars. The use of UBC plays a very important role in the service life of the vehicle. In general, it is required to spray such a protective coating in the manufacturing of the new car. Due to the high competitiveness of new car sales, car producers have pressure to reduce the manufacturing cost, so that they reduce or even completely eliminate the use of underbody coating where it is not to be easily seemed by car owners. As a consequence, our car service life will be greatly reduced.

\"底盘损坏\"\"底盘损坏\"

Many car owners all know to regularly maintain the vehicle by changing the engine oil and having the paint polished, but little attention has been paid to the bottom of the car. There are many cars that the surface looks glossy, while the underbody already rusting.

1. Prevent from stone chip

There are thousands of pieces of stones on the road, and they are constantly hitting your car on the underbody, wheel arches, sills, and the trunk lower part while driving on the road. In some cases, the underbody might be scratched by an uneven road. As such the thin corrosion protection coating on the metal sheet will be destroyed and leave the bare metal exposed to the air, which will soon come to corrosion when contact with the moisture in the air. If not promptly getting anti-rust treatment, then the rust will soon spread to large areas. Underbody coating or the anti-stone chip coating is a thick elastic layer that could not be easily damaged by stone chipping or scratch, therefore it could basically protect the metal sheet of the underbody.

2. External influence

The external environment, such as the baking from the hot road in summer, the road’s  anti-frozen gent in winter, raining water, and the salty water in the atmosphere, will attach the underbody of a car. Particularly in coastal areas, the wind from the sea will bring more salt to the air, which will accelerate the corrosion and reduce the service life of a car. While the underbody is covered by the thick and tight layers, it would act as a strong barrio to prevent these external substances from attaching the metal sheet.

3 Keep the value

A car could keep a high value while it is well maintained. It means that if a car is well treated on underbody protection, it could keep the car in a good condition and extend the car’s service life, or you could charge a higher price in used-car trading.

4 Improve driving comfort

After curing, the underbody coating becomes a thick elastic coating covering the whole underbody, which could act as a good dampening material, significantly reduce the vibration of the metal sheet and reduce the noise inside the car.

Collision body repair

For a collision body repair, usually, the metal part needs to be re-shaped or replaced some of the parts. These new parts also need to be treated against rust and anti-stone chip. So it is still mandatory to spray an underbody protection coating on the repaired car. Because it doesn’t need spray gun and compressed air, aerosol UBC seems to be more suitable for small area repair.

Advantages and Disadvantages:

Disadvantages:

1. The biggest drawback is the cost. Car dealership often charges quite a lot of money to undercoat a car, and for someone financing a new car purchase, this can add too much to the final purchase price.

2. undercoating is the addition to the vehicle\'s weight. Although it may not seem significant, the added weight of an undercoating can have an impact on the fuel efficiency of the car.

3. If not defect occurs during the coating process, then it may enter into mechanical parts.

Advantages:

1. Prevents fro adsorption, stone chip, and provides long term protection.

2. Increases driving comfort as it increases damping and reduces noise and vibration.

3. Underbody coating increases the resale value of the car.

4. It provides insulation to the interiors of the car against extreme temperatures from beneath the vehicle.

Types of underbody coating:

1. Rubberized Undercoating

Rubberized undercoating is easy to apply, and generally offers the best protective coating for your car’s undercarriage. It cushions surfaces against moisture, rust, dings, and dents. Rubberized undercoating is safe to use on quarter panels and wheel wells and dries with a soft rubbery finish.

2. Asphalt-based undercoating

Asphalt-based undercoating offers a higher level of protection suitable for large trucks, recreational vehicles, and heavy machinery. It’s formulated with some bits of rubberized material to aid in noise reduction. It offers extra protection against chips and moisture but is not paintable and, therefore, only suitable for undercarriages.

3. Polyurethane coating

Polyurethane coating is easy to apply and works by sealing up cracks and seams. The compound displaces salt and moisture and protects the unoxidized metal from rust. It’s often sold in canisters that are ready to preload into an application gun. It, however, requires some surface prep work before application, like degreasing, and applying an etching primer to the bare metal.

4. Wax or paraffin-based undercoating

Wax or paraffin-based undercoating sprays are the cheapest and quickest options available. However, their results don’t last long, and you may have to apply a fresh coat after only a few months. In addition, the wax isn’t very adhesive on a metal surface. Its main advantage is that it seeps quickly into cracks and seams, and offers moderate protective properties against moisture.
