Fender Design
Objective : To design the Front Fender of a car
Explanation :
What is a Fender ?
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Car fenders are the complex sheet of metal covering the front and the rear wheels of your car. Fenders on a car are panels that extend from the front bumper to the car’s doors.
Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

Types of Fenders
1) Full Bumper Type
These type of Fenders were used earlier which added more weight to the car.
2) Half Bumper Type
These are the most commonly used Fenders these days as it saves the material wastage of scraps and hence reduce the weight of car which results in better performance of the car. Further A Baffle a plastic material added to the sheet metal fender which reduces the overall cost of the product.

Fender Design
The Fender has 5 important regions :
1) Body - It is the Front part of the Fender which houses other components. It is the largest part in a Fender.
2) A - Pillar mounting area - Pillars are vertical supports on a vehicle. They are located around all the glass on an automobile. They are important for holding glass in place and adding structural integrity to a vehicle and also connected to the body side of the vehicle.

A-pillar is located on either side of the windshield at the front of the car.
3) Sill mounting Area - This Area links the fender with the sill (Underside of the door) of the car. Bolts are used to fix the fender.

4) Bumper mounting region - This connects the fender with the front bumper of the car.

5) Drip Area - This is the most important region in the fender design. As there are few standards set to design the drip area as it connects the fender with the engine compartment. Refer Fig.1.8.

6) Splash cover mount - This helps in unifrom holding of the fender which also connects the Baffle, a plastic part added to the sheet metal fender which reduces the overall cost & weight of the fender.

Design of the Drip Area
Fig.1.8.
The drip area is provided in fender model with all consideration and standards. The drip area region in fig.1.8. is done as per the master sections available as shown in fig.1.9.
Fig.1.9.
Important Points to be followed by referring the Master Section
1) The drip area should be of 300 mm or less from the back of fender to accomodate Wiper mounting region and easy installing of components in engine bay and 150 mm away from the bumper mounting region to accomodate the headlight housing.
2) The angle between the good and the fender is 3 degree minimum.
3) Extra 5 degree angle is given to the fender drip area to block the visibility of engine when viewed from outside.
3) The fender mounting area distance should not be deeper than 40 mm. Because it is difficult for the tool to produce the part if it greater than 40 mm.
4) The gap between the engine area and mounting of fender should be 10mm or over.
