Channel flow simulation using CONVERGE CFD
OBJECTIVE:
- To perform a CFD simulation of flow in a channel using CONVERGE cfd for three different base meshes.
- To generate velocity and pressure contours for all the 3 base mesh sizes.
- To plot a velocity, pressure,mass flow rate and total cell count for all 3 base mesh sizes.
PROFILE GEOMETRY:
BASE MESH SIZE:
dx = dy = dz =2e-3m
dx = dy = dz =1.5e-3m
dx = dy = dz =1.0e-3m
CASTE SETUP:
- General flow simulation
- Solver type - Pressure based steady state solver
- Inflow pressure - 110325 Pa at 300k
- Outflow pressure - 101325 Pa at 300k
- Species - Air
- Law of wall at top & bottom wall
- Start time : 0 cycles
- End time : 15000 cycles
CYGWIN RUN TIME
RESULTS: The simulation results for different mesh grid size as follows

Conclusion
- The total computational time can be reduced by running the simulation using parallel processors.
- Due to initial boundary conditions, we get a disturbance in the plots initially but eventually, we can get a steady state.
- According to velocity contour & plot, the magnitude of velocity is higher in the middle region of channel than to region near top & bottom of the wall.
- The contours obtained are smooth when a finer mesh is used for simulation. A coarse mesh can give results which can be hard to interpret.
- Mass is conserved. The addition of mass flow rate results in zero.
