Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body
Objective:
Simulate Flow of fluid over a throttle body in converge studio and post-process the results.
Geometry:
The elbow throttle valve was designed in solidworks.
It was then imported to converge studio
Case setup:
Boundary flagging and assigning of boundary conditions are performed.
The inlet & outlet were assigned inflow & outflow boundary conditions respectively.
The throttle was assigned stationary.
Parameters
- General flow gas simulation
- Fluid : Air
- Solver type : Pressure based steady state
- Turbulent Prandlt number : 0.9
- Turbulent Schmidt number :0.78
- Inflow pressure : 1.5 bar
- Outflow Pressure : 1bar
- Turbulence model : RNG k-`epsilon`
- Based grid size : 0.002 m
- Fixed Embedding (throttle) : scale:3, number of layers:2
- Total cycles : 15000
Meshing
Fixed embedding at Throttle
Processing
Time taken performed in cygwin
Result:
The simulation is run parallely. The converge uses MPI programming to parallelize the solver, which means the solver is equally distributed to given number of processors in the working computer. In the present problem, the solver is run with 4 processor which equally distributing the cell structure to each of the processors.

Conclusion
Firstly we can observe that the mass flowrate satisfies the continuity equation in all the CFL cases. Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body help us to get an overview of how the flow profile varies over the given case. We learnt how to do the case setup process for the given problem & how to run the simulation in CYGWIN terminal. This method of post processing the result is done in PARAview & different contours are plotted to analyse the cases.
