Differences Between CATIA and Solidworks

Technologies have paved the way for engineers to develop robust models and understand their performance in real-time without creating the actual prototype. For generating 2D/3D CAD models, assembly and detailing many software are being used.

CATIA and SolidWorks are the two most popular tools adopted by top OEMs worldwide. Both are used in different stages  of product design and development. Let us compare their features.

CATIA Vs SolidWorks Features

CATIA and SolidWorks are both 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software solutions used for product designing. Both are used for designing, simulating, analysing, and visualising CAD models..

Furthermore, these applications come with tools for creating 3D models, assemblies, and drawings. Additionally, both software packages offer parametric modelling, which allows engineers to modify the CAD models quickly and easily.

Some popular features of CATIA V5 are as follows:

    1. 3D Parametric Modeling: CATIA enables users to create 3D models that are parametrically controlled. This means models can be manoeuvred quickly and easily with just a few clicks.
    2. 3D Assembly Design: CATIA allows users to design complex assemblies with various components. It also provides tools to check and optimise the assembly design.
    3. Product Design: This simulation platform includes many tools to create and design products. It includes tools for design optimisation, CAD design, and advanced simulation.
    4. Drafting and Detailing: CATIA provides comprehensive drafting and detailing tools to create and edit 2D drawings.
    5. Manufacturing: CATIA provides various tools for CNC programming, rapid prototyping, and 3D printing.
    6. Collaboration: CATIA v5 allows users to collaborate with other team members. It supports various data exchange formats, including STEP, IGES, and XML.
    7. Sheet Metal Design: CATIA is widely used for sheet metal designing and Class A surface modelling for automobiles. It enables the user to create complex geometry and provides access to the surface toolbar.

Salient Features of SolidWorks

Here are some actions that you may execute using SolidWorks:

  1. SolidWorks 3D CAD: It is a powerful 3D modelling software that can be used to create complex parts and assemblies in various industries. It offers exclusive tools to help users design and engineer products.
  2. Precise Simulation: SolidWorks Simulation is a complete suite of software tools that can be used to analyse and validate product designs. It offers a range of tools to help users evaluate the performance and safety of their designs.
  3. SolidWorks Visualize: SolidWorks Visualize is a powerful tool for creating photorealistic renderings of product designs. It can be used to create images for marketing and promotional materials or visualise product development concepts.
  4. SolidWorks PDM: SolidWorks PDM is a secure data management system that can be used to store, manage, and share product data. It provides a secure collaboration, version control, and document management environment.
  5. SolidWorks CAM: This is a computer-aided manufacturing software that can be used to generate CNC toolpaths and post-process NC programs. It supports machining operations, including milling, drilling, boring, and turning.

What Are the Differences Between CATIA and SolidWorks?

Both CATIA and SolidWorks are products of Dassault Systèmes with different functionalities.

CATIA is widely utilised by the automotive and aerospace industries and mainly focuses on surface modelling. Whereas 3D part and assembly modelling is done using SolidWorks.

SolidWorks is known for its user-friendly UI. However, if you want to accomplish powerful fluid dynamics simulations which could determine risk factors, then CATIA should be the first choice.

Pricing

The CATIA v5 license varies from $9000 - $65000 per person. For SOLIDWORKS you need to pay $3995 and $1295 annually for a licence.

CATIA does not have a trial version. It has been complimented by a web-based emulator called ‘3D Innovator’, where you can try CATIA risk-free for 30 days.

Upgrading to SolidWorks' fundamental features can be accomplished in two different ways.

OS Requirements for the CATIA Software

  • You would need Windows 7 or its updated versions.
  • The processor must be 64-bit Intel i5 or better.
  • A graphics card is not needed.

OS Requirements for the SolidWorks Software

  • At least Windows 10 version needs to be pre-installed.
  • A minimum of 22 GB of free disk space is required.
  • Intel core i5 processors or better versions are needed.
  • Excel plug-in is mandatory to produce reports.

Conclusion

SolidWorks has higher hardware requirements than CATIA while being generally more competent software. This is primarily because SolidWorks requires time (even up to a whole day) to perform rendering.

To learn their usage, you can enrol for courses at Skill-Lync. We provide you with a chance to work on industry-level projects using software tools to help you gain hands-on experience.
