Future of Electric Vehicles

We are currently in the middle of the biggest revolution in the motor industry since Henry Ford's in 1913. Many industry experts believe we have already passed the tipping point where sales of electric vehicles will very rapidly outpace petrol and diesel vehicles.

Jaguar plans to sell only electric cars from 2025, Volvo from 2030, and last week the British sportscar company, Lotus, said they would sell only electric models from 2028. Almost every vehicle manufacturer is trying to design the best electric vehicle, one that makes the best economic sense.

As a budding engineer, you must equip yourself with the skills needed in this industry in order to get yourself acclimated to this change. Studies indicate that the employability in Hybrid Electric Vehicles alone will increase by 15%.

Many governments around the world are setting targets to partially or completely ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles. But, what makes the end of the internal combustion engine inevitable is due to a technological revolution.

The battery is that technological revolution

The Battery

The latest electric car, the Tesla 3 has certainly created waves in the industry. It is comfortable and it will do 300 miles on a single charge. With massive improvements in technology including automated computers, charging systems, and car design.

The most staggering change is attributed to the beating heart of the vehicle, the battery.

Just a decade ago batteries cost $1,000 per kilowatt hour. Now it has dropped to one-tenth of that price, $100. That is reckoned to be the point at which batteries start to become cheaper than their internal combustion engine counterparts. When the ever-surging fuel prices and servicing are factored in, the cost of buying and maintaining an electric vehicle is almost the same as that of an ICE vehicle.

Evolution of the Electric Vehicle Market

The electric car market is already growing exponentially. Global sales of electric cars increased exponentially in 2020, rising by 43% to a total of 3.2 million. This is all considering that the overall car sales slumped by a fifth during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The above graph clearly indicates that in 2022, we are close to the steep part of the S-Curve. It is predicted that 20% of cars worldwide will be electric in 2025.

Steps you can take to establish a Career in EV

So what can you do as an electrical engineer?

The simple answer is to

  • Find your specific area of expertise in electric vehicles
  • Learn the prerequisite software, and tools and build your career in that area.

This will allow you to become employable for even the best electric vehicle manufacturing companies.

It is initially difficult to get yourself into the field without able guidance. This is where Skill-Lync can help you.
