Wiring harness routing & packaging Rules Week 3 Challenge

WIRING HARNESS ROUTING AND PACKAGING RULES

                             (CLIPS,BACKSHELL AND CORRUGATED TUBES)

Aim:

To Study and understang the different models of the clips, backshell and corrugated tube and convert the given CAD data file of the P Clamp into Electrical support and BackShell into the electrical back shell by electrical part design workbench available in the Catia V5 tool. Then create different corrugated tubes as per the given data and add them to a new catalog named Slit COT.

Introduction:

Wiring Harness:

A wire harness often reffered to as a cable harness or wiring assembly,is a systematic and integrated arrangement of cables within an insulated material. The purpose of the assembly is  to transmit signal or eletric power.Cables are bound together with straps,Cable ties, cable lacing, sleeves, electrical tape, conduit, or a conduit or a combination and etc.The Wire harness simplies the connection to larger components by integrating the wiring into a single unit for drop in installation.A wiring harness consists different sets of connectors like terminals and wires which run through the entire Vehicle and transmit information.

A wire Harness process is designed based on the geometric and electrical requirements of the equipment it is to be installed in.Once the initial Design is established,a schematic is used to create the manufacturing paperwork and the assembly  board for the harness. The assembly board, also called a pin board,is a full size Diagram of the Harness that shows all of the components and their locations. It also serves as the workbench for the harness.

CLAMPS:

Clamps are ideal elements for retaining/holding pipes,Cables,Cable harnesses, hoses and etc.Clamps are acts as form fitting adjustable bands for ease of assembly and installation. The band ends of the clips are reinforced to prevent any tearing or loosening due to high mechanical bonds.P Clamps are fitted with EPDM liners which help achieve a tighter grip on the cable/conduit and also acts as dampeners for sound and vibration.

BACK SHELLS:

A Back shell is a mechanical device threaded into the rear of an electrical connector and is designed to provide screening, sealing and reparability.Engineered to help resist corrosion and fit a wide range of circular connectors.Backshell components help protect connectors from mechanical wear, environmental conditions and electromagnetic interference (EMI).These are available with and without screen terminations, providing long term ,high performance in sealed and unsealed electronics systems.

CORRUGATED TUBES:

Corrugated tubes made from the flame retardant material these tubes will protect cables from impact and abrasion.they are highly flexible and have a high fatigue life, making them ideal for any installation.Depending on the intended use, corrugated tubing is manufactured in different diameters and from the different materials.even though these are usually rigid materials, convoluted plastic tubing becomes flexible and bendable  due to its corrugated manufacturing method.

Design Methodology:

1.P-CLAMP:

Process:

  • From mechanical part Design workbench create entry point and exit point for the p clamp.
  • Create Planes on the Entry point and exit points created and also created a base plane.

  • Switch to electric part design.
  • Click support definition on both sides-select part-select entry point-select entry plane, exit plane and base plane.

Catalogue Document:

2.BACKSHELL:

Process:

  • Create Back shell connecting point.
  • Create bundle connection point.
  • Create axis system for the backshell connection point.

  • Switch to Electrical Part Design.
  • Apply electrical property to the part using define back shell command.
  • Define back shell connection point.
  • Define Bundle connection point.

Catalogue:

3.COT Tubes

Create following corrugated tubes and add them in catalogue under slit COT family.

Process:

  • Switch to electrical part Design.
  • Select Define protection part.
  • Click on part on the design free.
  • Provide requried dimensions to create the part.

COT Tube 5mm:

And added to Slit COT Catalogue.

COT Tube 10mm:

This also added to Slit COT Catalogue.

COT Tubes 15mm:

This also added to the Slit COT Catalogue.

COT Tube 20mm:

This also added to the Slit COT Catalogue.

COT Tube 35mm:

This also added to the Slit COT catalogue.

Conclusion:

The CAD parts have been successfully given electrical properties and COT tubes are created with requried dimensions and also added every parts to respective catalogue documents for future accessibility.
