Challenge

Wiring harness design in CATIA V5 - 3D modeling Week 5 & 6 Challenge

Aim- Route two electrical harness as per the given layout and interconnect them as a single harness assembly and then check the bundle continuity and then give annotations to the final harness assembly.

Objective-

1st Objective of this project is to route the two Harness A and Harness B as per the given harness layout shown below-

2nd Objective is to check the Bundle continuity after routing two harness A and harness B.

3rd objective is to interconnect the two harnesses electrically.

4th Objective is to add annotation to all the connectors that is on Harness A and Harness B.

5th Final objective of this project is to convert the final harness file into IGS file format.

Content-

Step 1-Defining all the electrical connectors geometrically and electrically.

Step 2-Creating harness A and harness B.

Harness A is routed by following this layout.

Above figure shows the final routed image of Harness A.

Harness B is routed by following this layout.

Above figure shows the final routed image of Harness B.

Step 3-Checking bundle continuity of Harness A and Harness B seperately.

First,we have to make sure that the multi-branch able is selected and then we have to go in "EDIT>SEARCH>ADVANCED>ELECTRICAL WORKBENCH>TYPE-BUNDLE SEGMENT>ATTRIBUTE-FULLY CONNECTED."

Selecting the "TRUE" option will ahow all the connected bundle segments while selecting "FALSE" will show all the non-connected bundle segements.

In our case we select TRUE and search for results. All the bundle segments are highlighted and found showing that all the bundle segments are electrically connected.

Above figure shows the bundle continuity of Harness B.

Above figure shows the bundle continuity of Harness A.

Step 4-In this step, we have to interconnect the wiring Harness A and Harness B electrically.

First we have to make a new product file and rename it as "FINAL HARNESS ASSEMBLY".

Second, copy both harness A and harness B and paste it into the newly created product file to make the harness assembly as shown below.

Here in this stage we can use manupulation tools found in the assembly design workbench in CATIA V5 to connect the two wiring harness. But we have to keep that in mind that by following this process the two harness will not be connected electrically. To properly connect them we have to go to Electrical Assembly Design workbench and use "connect electrical devices" feature as shown below.

Above figure shows that the Harness A and Harness B is electrically connected.

Step 5-Here in this step we will check bundle warnings in Harness A and B.

Geometrical bundle warnings are shown for Bend radius,Bundle diameter,Vector position. If these values or input are incorrect then yellow colour will appear in the tree structure next to the branch with problems.Depending on the route of the bundle segment we can corect the issue by adding some extra slack or by changing vector position of the segment point. In our case we have one error as shown below in Harness B in branch 2.

This error can be corrected by changing the direction of routing that is reverse tangent.

Step 6-Adding annotation to all electrical connectors.

Step 7-Here in this step we have to convert our Final Assembly file into IGS format.

Final image of the two Harness A and B interconnected electrically is shown below-
