Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge
Aim: To simulate Tension and Torsion test using Explicit dynamics in Ansys Workbench.
Objective: To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided. To displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed. For the torsion test, you will need to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree. To find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimens and attach appropriate images to show your results.
- Import the model provided and check the geometry in the Ansys Spaceclaim for any abnormalities.

- Apply the material as steel 1006 to the specimen.

- Now, mesh the specimen with an element size as 2 mm.

- Following analysis settings have been used for the simulation with an end time of 0.001 seconds.

- Apply Fixed support to the one end of the rod as shown.

- Displacing the one end of the rod for 18mm in x direction.

- Insert total deformation in x axis, equivalent stress, equivalent elastic strain, temperature.
- Finally following solutions have been obtained after running the simulation

Similarily for Torsion: Only Displacement settings needs to be changed as
- For displacement of 1200 degree following was used in y direction:

- Followings results were obtained for torsion:

Conclusion:

From the above results, we can say that
-
In tension, the specimen has failed due to due to maximum tensile stresses developed on it. Neck like structure is formed in the specimen.
-
In torsion, the specimen has failed due to due to maximum shear stresses developed on it.
-
Also, we can see that the maximum temperature is seen in torsion due to high shear stress.
- Strain observed is similar in both the cases.
