Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Aim:

The objective of this project is to conduct tension (case 1) and torsion (case 2) simulation to find total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen.

Model Set-up:

A CAD model to conduct tension and torsion analysis has been imported into explicit dynamics workbench. Steel 1006 material has been assigned to it from explicit material library.

Mesh:

A tetrahedron method mesh was defined for the whole model. In both, the cases a face sizing was given to two ends of the model with sphere of influence type with a sphere radius of 22mm and 3mm element size as shown in image 1. In the second case for the interior sides of the model, an element size of 1.5mm was given image 2 and with a sphere of influence type, the neck region was given a 1mm mesh with 8mm sphere radius as shown in image 3. The mesh details for case1 are given in image 4 and for case 2 are given in image 5.

Analysis:

The analysis was set with an end time of 0.001 seconds. The left side of the model was fixed (image 6) and the right side of the model was displaced by 18mm in case 1 (image 7) and rotated by 1200 degrees in case 2 (image 8). The rotation was done by assigning a coordinate system at the centre of the model in the y-direction.

Results and Conclusions:

The results for total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature in tension case are given in images 10,11,12.

From the above results, we can conclude that stresses are high in case of tension but the temperature generated in high in case of torsion as the deformation is more. We can also conclude that in torsion, failure occurs.
