Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge
REPORT
MACHINING WITH PLANAR
OBJECTIVE
To perform explicit dynamics simulation on machining with planar to find out the equivalent stress, total deformation and temperature developed.
CASE 1
PROCEDURE
For this simulation, we have a workpiece and a cutting tool. To perform machining process, first set the work piece stationary and advance cutting tool towards the work piece so that the process will carryout.
We use steel 1006 for the work piece
and structural steel for cutting tool
Opened the model in mechanical GUI
This is explicit dynamics so we do not need contacts so deleted it. Stiffness behaviour of cutting tool is set to rigid.
MESH
A tetrahedron mesh is applied to cutting tool and six divisions are made to edge of the workpiece using edge sizing.
ANALYSIS SETTING
End time is set to 7.5e-4
Fixed support is given to workpiece
A velocity of 20000 milli meter per second is given to cutting tool
RESULT
THE EQUIVALENT STRESS

THE TOTAL DEFORMATION
THE TEMPERATURE OF BODY
CASE 2
Here the velocity given to cutting tool is 15000. All other procedures are same.
RESULTS

CONCLUSION
The simulation is completed successfully for the both cases. The maximum stress and temperature developed in case 1 is more than in case 2, this is because the velocity of cutting tool is more. The faster the machining process, the more stress and temperature developed.
When the machining process is faster, it increases the mechanical forces, thermal loads and dynamic effects, all of which contributes to greater stress development.
