Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge
Aim : To perform an explicit dynamics simulation on Machining with planer model.
Objectives :
- To find out the Equivalent Stress, Total Deformation and also insert a User defined result to calculate the temperature of the body.
- You need to perform this for 2 cases. One will be with a cutting velocity of 20000mm/s and the other will be with a cutting velocity of 15000mm/s.
Procedure :
Engineering data and Material selection :
- Open explicit dynamics model.
- Go to engineering data and open engineering data sources.
- Open explicit materials and add Steel 1006 material.

Geometry :
- Open geometry.
- Import the model.

Model setup :
- Open ANSYS mechanical.
- Go to geometry and assign the material as Steel 1006 to Workpiece.
- Make the cutting tool's stiffness behaviour to Rigid.

Meshing :
- Insert the method of meshing and select the geometry as the cutting tool body and type as tetrahedrons.
- Insert the sizing and select the edges of the workpiece and set the number of divisions to 10, to assign particular number of divisons to the workpiece.
- Click on generate mesh and the output of the generated mesh will be as shown below.

Velocity :
- Insert velocity as 20000 mm/s for Case 1 and 15000 mm/s for Case 2 in X-direction.

Fixed support :
- Fixed the bottom face of workpiece.

Solution :
Create output results for :
- Total deformation.
- Equivalent stress.
- Equivalent plastic strain.
- Temperature of the Workpiece.
Results :
Case 1 : For velocity 20000 mm/s.
Total deformation :

Equivalent stress :
Equivalent plastic strain :
Temperature of the workpiece :

Case 2 : For velocity 15000 mm/s.
Total deformation :

Equivalent stress :

Equivalent plastic strain :

Temperature of the workpiece :

Comparison of Results :
| Sr.No. | Results | Case 1 | Case 2 |
| 1 | Maximum Total deformation (mm) | 32.529 | 28.845 |
| 2 | Minimum Total deformation (mm) | 0 | 0 |
| 3 | Maximum Equivalent stress (MPa) | 652.73 | 660.93 |
| 4 | Minimum Equivalent stress (MPa) | 1.9726 | 2.2051 |
| 5 | Maximum Equivalent plastic strain | 1.4741 | 1.4961 |
| 6 | Minimum Equivalent plastic strain | 0 | 0 |
| 7 | Maximum Temperature of Workpiece (C) | 371.53 | 382.69 |
| 8 | Minimum Temperature of Workpiece (C) | 21.593 | 21.428 |
Conclusion :
- From above results for higher velocity we get good surface finish of machined surface.
- Deformation value decrease as the velocity decreases.
- More stress and strain values are seen for lower cutting velocity.
- Temperature of workpiece is more in case of lower cutting velocity.
