Challenge

Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge

OBJECTIVE-

  • As we are working with the academic version,we need to cut the gear by half so as to bring the model within limits.
  • For the challenge,we have to rotate the worm so as to get to almost end of the half cut and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation in the model.

PROCEDURE-

  • Transient Structural Analysis system is used to carry out the simulation.
  • Structural steel is used as material for both the worm and the gear.
  • We will open the model in spaceclaim and split the Gear in half so that we can access the model in mechanical module.

CONNECTIONS-

  • The contact type between the Worm and the Gear is set as Frictionless.Thirty faces of the Gear teeth is selected as the target bodies and nine faces of the worm is marked as the contact body.

JOINTS-

  • A Body-ground Revolute joint is used for the gear.
  • Another Body-Ground Revolute joint is used for the worm as well.

MESHING-

We will generate default mesh on both of the components for this simulation.Adaptive Sizing is turned "ON" for this case.

ANALYSIS SETTING-

Number Of Steps- 25

Initial Time Step-0.2

Minimum Time Step-0.2

Maximum Time Step-0.5

Weak Springs- Program Controlled

for 2-25 Steps

Initial,Minimum and Maximum Time step will remain same.

Carryover Time Step- ON

BOUNDARY CONDITIONS-

  • A Revolute joint load is provided to the worm along the Z-axis.

RESULTS-

Total Deformation for the model:

Equivalent Stress for the Model:

Equivalent Elastic Strain:
