Week 6- Challenge
TWO DIMENSIONAL ELEMENTS MESHING OF THE HOOD
Hood is an essential part of the vehicle. It protects the engine and avoid any kind of impacts. In order to meet these requirements, analysis of hood rises as a compulsory step. So the quality of meshing needs to be good and meet the given criteria for an accurate analysis.
OBJECTIVE: -
- Perform topology cleanup and midsurface extraction for each component.
- Create 2D elements meshing of good quality.
- Check elements according to the given quality criteria.
PROCEDURE: -
- Import the hood file and delete all the solids from the components.
- Cad geometry has topology details that interfere with mesh quality. So we need to cleanup the geometry first by using "Quick edit panel". Remove the unnecessary points, suppress edges and replace fixed points options so that we can achieve a proper mesh flow.
- Use washer split around a hole to get proper quad mesh. Split surf-line is also very helpful to create edges wherever necessary.

- Select a small area of geometry and use the Automesh panel and size and bias meshing method to create the mesh. Set the mesh type as mixed and the element size as 5mm.
- We can achieve a better mesh pattern in the intial stage by alter the individual densities of elements. Remesh the existing meshes and try to maintain a constant size for elements.
- Use the cleanup tools in the quality index panel to edit the elements which are failing. Place node option can be used to get rid of the elements which are failing for maximum length. Similarly drag tria elements and combine tria elements can be used to fix the worse elements.
- Apply Smooth command to make the small adjustment needed to get the curvature for the entire mesh.
- Check for elements which are not attached by edges tool and delete them. Use equivalence to remove the coincident nodes, based on a search tolerance which we can specify.
- By editing the elements i.e. spliting the elements and creating we can eliminate the failing elements.
fig: MESHING OF THE INNER EXTRACT
- In order to perform the model checkup go to tools menu and select normal tool. We can adjust the direction of normal if there are some kind of discontinuity.
- Assign material as "Steel" and property to the components. Take thickness value for the components as 4mm.
- Check the elements for dependency and penetration under the tool menu.
- The check elements panel allow us to investigate each specific element criteria, view a breakdown of all failed and worst elements, resolve all criteria violations at one time, and evaluate the over all quality of a mesh.

CONCLUSION: -
- Performed the manual topology cleanup. midsurface extraction and 2-D meshing for all the five components of the hood.
- Achieved the mentioned quality criteria for all the components of the hood.
LEARNING OUTCOME: -
- Gained experience on how to perform the 2-D meshing for large components.
- Also learned about the different quality parameters related to the meshing.
