Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
AIM:
To perform transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly.
Objective
To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly and determine the Total Deformation, Equivalent Stress and Equivalent Elastic Strain developed in the model.
Procedure -
Create Transient structural analysis and in engineering data select the material structural steel.
Structural Steel.

Import the geometry and check in SpaceClaim for any irregularities.
Then open Ansys mechanical and rename the component as Worm and Gear then assign the structural steel material to all components.

Contact - one contact created as frictionless contact.
Frictionless - Worm To Gear

Joints
Revolute - Ground To Gear

Revolute - Ground To Worm

Mesh - Mesh the whole geometry with 2.5mm element size.

Analysis Settings - The simulation runs for 30 steps. So, the number of steps is set as 30.
Large deflection set to on, weak springs set to program controlled, auto time stepping to on, defined by time. Initial time step set to 0.2s, Minimum time step set to 0.2s and Maximum time step set to 0.5s. For second to thirty step set carry over time step to on. In Output control set all output to yes.

Joint - Rotation - the revolute joint on the worm is provided a rotation of 1500 degrees.

Run the simulation and results obtained.
Result - The analysis runs successfully and results obtained.
Total Deformation Max - 14.82 mm

Equivalent Stress Max - 1805.6 Mpa

Equivalent Strain Max - 0.0092313 mm/mm

Conclusion -
- The maximum stress occurs at point of contact.
- The maximum deformations are basically measurements of displacement of a worm gear assembly with respect to its initial position.
- The maximum stress and strain is observed at the teeth root of gear .
