Challenge

Week 8 - Universal Joint

Aim-

For this challenge, you will have to perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy(They can all be found in the General Materials section) The three materials must be used on the joint with the springs alone. Use a refined mesh if possible for the academic license. You need to obtain the Equivalent stress and total deformation for all the three cases and compare them. Submit a report regarding the same.

Procedure-

1) Open Ansys work bench and drag transient strucutral into project schematics

2) Now open engineering data and select Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy

3) Now import the model into spaceclaim and look for any abnormality in the model, if everthing is correct then close the spaceclaim

4) Now open Model for setup,

in matrials we need not to assign any new material for CASE 1, defualt matrial is strutural steel,

Go to connections and delete any pre existing contact region

now add a body to ground fixed joint

2 body to ground revolute joint

4 Body to body revolute joints for 1st joint ( here select mobile as the part which will move with reffrence surface, so in 2 joints the ball will be reffrence for bottom joint and for reaming 2 the ball will be mobile for above reffrence joint)

4 Body to body revolute joints for 2nd joint

In Mesh apply a element sizing of 4mm and turn off adaptive sizing

In analysis settings

steps- 5

auto time stepping- off

wek springs - program controlled

large deflection - on

Now define a joint load as follows

in solutions add Equivalent stress and total deformation

CASE 2

here only change the matrial for the spring joint, everthing else will remain the same

Results

CASE 3

Change Material to Titanium Alloy

Conclusion-

Materials

Total Deformation Equivalent Stresses
Structural Steel 38.637mm 1478.9 MPa
Stainless Steel 38.637mm 1430.3 MPa
Titanium Alloy 38.637mm 723.16 MPa

The total deformation in each case remaind the same as the boundry condtion for joint was the same so there won't be any change in this

as for the equivalent stresses developed , strucutral steel have least strength(460MPa) compared to others so it will also get most stress, titanium have maxium strength (1070Mpa) as compared to others so will not be stressed as much as other

the pastic deformation will only happen in Structural steel and stainless steel, as there yeild strength is way lower then the stresses generated in them, only elastic deformation will happen in titanium as its yeild strength is 930MPa which is higher then the stresses generated in it.
