Week 8 - Simulating Cyclone separator with Discrete Phase Modelling

Aim: To simulate the flow of air mixed particulate matter through the cyclone separator

Introduction: A cyclone separator is a electromechical apparatus used to separate out the particulate matter from the air to make is purified using the principle of centrifugation action. The separation through this device depends on various factors such as instream flow velocities, particle size, density of the particles. It generally transform the inertis forces of a gas particles to centrifugal force using a vortex generated in a cyclonic body.

Theory: In this problem, we are introducing an air stream mixed with Anthracyte particulate matter into the cyclonic separator at different velocities, with varying particle sizes to study the effect of these variables in its efficieny and pressure drop across the separator for air inflow.

Various cyclonic efficiency empirical models are enlisted as below:

1. Iozia and Leith model: Developed on the bases of force balance.

2. Li and Wang model: Developed on the bases of radial particle velocity and readial concentration profile.

3. Koch and Licht model: Recognized the inherently turbulent natures of cyclones and distribution of gas residence time within the cyclones.

4. Lapple model: Developed based on the force balance without considering the flow resistance.

Further pre processor, solver and post processing are discussed in file attached herewith.
