Morphing in ANSA

Aim:

1.To understand the application of morphing technique in various industries

2.To alter the design of the given geometry with morphing method

Morphing in Industries and its application.

Morphing is the adjustment of shape and size of the component to the new size and shape without disturbing the connectivity and the boundary conditions, the topology of the CAD stays same only the coordinates of the nodes change.

Morphing is used for number of different purposes in industries, to create shape parameters (to change length, thickness), To move on to a new know shape (update the design), To move onto the shape predicted by the CAE solution (to optimize the shape) (Design News ,2020).

Implementing morphing can help in reducing the time taken to develop new designs, with morphing one may not require going back to CAD designer to update the geometry, and the mesh morphing the CAE model can be updated in the background by keeping all the BC’s and loading cases, the updated nodal position require less computational time during solving.

The below image shows the application of morphing technique used in automotive industry to modify the base design to other passenger classes vehicles SUV’s to CUV’s and Sedan calss. (images taken from BETA CAE Systems USA, Inc.)

Morphing in aviation industry.

Aviation industry uses morphing in a same way as is used in the automobile industry. image taken from (Detroit Engineered Products (DEP))

2.To alter the design of the given geometry with morphing method

Model 1:

To begin morphing, switch the modules selection to MORPH.

Split the morph box to adjust the handle points later.

To morph the geometry select the points and geo check and continue,

according to the CAD changes move the cursor to desired position, and middle click to confirm the changes to the CAD.

Right click on the box to create a local co-ordinate system to move according to the co-ordinate system as shown below.

Select x-axis to move the geometry in x-axis.

before and after images of the CAD geometry.

Model 2:

Perform similar operations on the model to change the topology of the CAD to match the desired shape.

Morphed geometry of the model 2.

Learning Outcome:

Morphing module, ways to carry out morphing in ANSA, applications of morphing in industries.

Conclusion:

Morphing is carried out on the given models to change the CAD geometry without disturbing the connectivity of the model, final CAD is similar in topology but varies in dimension in the 2nd model.

Application of morphing in automotive industry is to use the base CAD to change the vehicle model to different passenger class vehicle (SUV to sedan and vice versa), similarly in aerospace industry morphing is used to apply the design of jets to cargo planes.
