MORPHING

AIM:

To perform morphing for the given cad model.

INTRODUCTION :

Morphing is an adaptation of a given shape to a new form. The geometry of a given concept model can be modified to required proportions to create new designs. CAE Morphing allows users to work on the FE mesh directly reducing the time taken to go back to the designer to update the geometry

Types of morphing

  • Domain (Box) Morphing

Domain or Box Morphing is preformed via boxes that are created around a particular part or assembly that the user intends to morph. The movement of the Morphing boxes control points defines the morphing operations on the entities inside the Morph box. This type of Morphing can be applied to both FE and Geometry based models.

  • Direct Morphing

ANSA’s Direct morphing features gives the user the ability to efficiently modify a part locally without having to create Morphing boxes. This method is extremely useful in creating local modifications on single parts. Creation of depressions, surface fitting certain FE part features to new target geometry, moving selected features along the contour of a surface and also the ability to freeze (rigid) elements during the morphing process are some of the direct morphing abilities.

  • Parametric Morphing

The desired morphing actions can be saved as parameters which can be accessed in batch mode. Users can enforce desired shape changes by changing numerical input value for the appropriate parameter. This method of morphing is highly utilized for coupling of the morphing operations to an external optimizer. The scripting capability can be used in conjunction with ANSA’s parametric morphing functionality to deliver faster DOE models.

  • Geometry Morphing

ANSA brings to the CAE world its ‘one – of – a kind’ tool for CAD geometry morphing. This pioneering concept allows the user to utilize the inventory of all the familiar FE morphing functions to perform equivalent operations in a CAD environment on geometric entities.

Applications of Morphing

Automobile Industry

Morphing is extreamely useful in studying effect of design changes, like changes in vehicle Structure with small changes in design, evaluation of design concepts starting from the morphed predecessor models, retrofit design and Aerodynamic modelling.

Ship Design

In recent times Morphing have been used extensively in Ship hull design as it reduces time and can gnerate enough parametric possibilities for improvements in Hull design, one of the most important aspect of ship designing.

Biomedical Research

Morphing is actively used in biomedical research in areas such as determintion the biomechanical response of a structure, implant positioning and virtual bone modelling.

Turbine Design and Analysis

Mesh and Shape Morphing is Applied in Aerodynamic stress Analysis in turbine/helicopter blades

PROCEDURE:

  • Import the cad and perform topo operation and check geometry if there any error then fix it
  • For morphing go to the “morphing menu” > select “new” > select “ortho” > select desired geometry >press middle mouse click.
  • For changing shape select “move” > right click in morph box > select required node which is responsible for shape change > and move in desired dimension > press middle mouse button for conformation

LEARNING OUTCOMES :

  • Learned how to perform Morphing operation on a given model to achieve the required change in shape.
  • Gained understanding on how to make finer adjustments in the geometry while morphing by splitting the Morph Box into smaller sections.

CONCLUSION :

Morphing Operation was carried out on the given models to achieve the necessary alterations in shape as per the requirements.
